A two-day course
All children have the right to live lives free from abuse and neglect but recent events highlight, yet again, how difficult it can be for so many adults to recognise, and act on concerns about the safety or welfare of a child. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all organisations concerned with children should work towards what's best for each child. The Designated Person for Child Protection has a vital role within organisations helping to ensure that adequate safeguards are in place and that necessary action is taken when concerns about a child are raised. This two day training course will consider:
- The role of the Designated Person and how this can be incorporated into your organisation
- Legislation and guidance on safeguarding children and young people, particularly within the Welsh context
- Essential safeguarding measures that need to be in place
- The 'abuse of trust' and how to remain alert to potential sexual offences within the organisation
- Assessing concerns about a child and making a referral to social services if necessary
- The statutory child protection system and what may be expected of you
- Confidentiality and good record keeping
- Diversity and the additional vulnerabilities for some children
About the Trainer
Claire Sharp has worked with children and young people, in the voluntary and statutory sector, for over twenty years and currently works as Children in Wales' Training Officer.
Claire spent many years working in the field of domestic abuse, directly supporting children and young people in refuges and in the community, before moving on to manage Children's Services at Welsh Women's Aid. She has an ongoing interest in encouraging education and learning, in its broadest sense, having worked both as a primary teacher and in the supervision and assessment of student social workers in child and family teams.

A half day course
Children are increasingly becoming regular users of internet connected devices from a very young age. A study 'Children and parents: Media use and attitudes in the nations', published by Ofcom in 2012 reported that in each of the four nations over 80% of children aged 5-15 use the internet at home. Parents of children aged 5 -15 in Wales are more likely than the UK average to have concerns about content on the internet (25% vs. 17%) and smartphone ownership among 5 -15s has increased in all four nations since 2011. Adults who care for and support young children, and their parents often express a lack of confidence in using and managing access to the technology that the children take for granted.
This course is aimed at anyone working with children under 8 years old and who wants to ensure that any access to new technology (computers, tablets, games consoles, smart phones etc) is both safe and appropriate. It is particularly suitable for adults who are not IT specialists.
Aims
For adults who work directly with younger children or with their parents to better understand the implications of internet use in this age group. To explore concerns, and to develop some practical methods to support safe use of a range of devises that are increasing becoming an integral part of the daily lives of young children.
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
- Understand the ways in which children are able to access the internet
- Consider both the risks and benefits of younger children using internet connected devices
- Understand the benefits and shortcomings of using parental controls on a variety of devices
- Devised a set of ground rules for safe use of the internet and computers
- Be able to support children to better protect themselves online
- Identify warning signs to be aware of and how to report concerns
About the Trainer
Jon Trew is an experienced child protection trainer having delivered training to groups as diverse as housing maintenance staff, dentists and childcare workers. Jon has wide experience of working with children of all ages and backgrounds, having managed a children's center, a nursery, an afterschool club and holiday play-care schemes. As early as the 1990's Jon was an enthusiast for using computers to work with children as young as four and five and has continued to promote safe ways for young children to access the internet and other electronic media. Jon has experience of working face to face with children as well as a deep understanding of the technical challenges it presents. Jon said "A study in October 2011 found on average, the children who use computers started doing so at age 3 ½, while half of children under 8 in the US had access to a mobile device like a smartphone, an iPad or other tablet. The internet offers huge opportunities for our children to explore, learn and enjoy, however the benefits of this revolution are matched by threats and difficulties. Waiting until children reach their early teens before we consider internet safety is just too late. Parents, teachers and all child care professionals must rise to this challenge and ensure they are able to guide, monitor and protect our children through this new age".
Costs:
Members £60
Non Members £80
