The assessor role provides a great opportunity for professional development and enhancing your knowledge and experience of youth work across Wales. Those wishing to express an interest in becoming an Assessor for The Quality Mark for Youth Work in Wales should:

·        Read the 'role of the assessor' document

·        Send a CV and personal statement in Welsh or English (of no more than 500 words) outlining their suitability for the role to YouthWork@Wales.GSI.Gov.UK 

·        Be available to attend a training event in Cardiff on 22 October 2015 and then complete a short practical exercise.

The closing date : 5pm 12^th October 2015.

Learning Disability Wales, Cardiff Law School and our partners would like to invite you to a special one day event looking at the experiences of disabled people and their families, and the developments in law and practice in Wales affecting them.

This conference will take stock of developments in the law and practice in Wales concerning the rights of disabled people and their families, with particular focus on:

• social care
• health
• carers
• special education rights
• how to remedy failures by public bodies.

The conference brings together many leading disability law and policy practitioners and commentators, whose work has shaped the law and practice in this field. The event provides an opportunity for discussion and debate and will be of special relevance to those who are affected by legislation such as:

• NHS (Wales) Act 2006
• Education Act 1996
• Equality Act 2010.

Parenting Conferences 2015: Supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of children and parents - the contribution of parenting support services

Tuesday, 29 September 2015; 9.30am - 4.00pm Glasdir Conference Centre, Llanrwst, north Wales & Thursday, 15 October 2015; 9.30am - 4.00pm Park Inn by Raddisson, Cardiff Central Children in Wales' Parenting Conference this year will focus on how to support the mental and emotional health of children and parents, including the relationship between family members.  Participants will consider what a continuum of support from universal to specialist support would look like and the challenges relating to service planning and training.  We will also explore examples of good practice in meeting needs and measuring impact.  Workshops will further support discussions on a range of topics relating to policy and practice. Who should attend? Professionals providing family and parenting support and those with a policy lead or interest in family and parenting support. Confirmed speakers:  Honor Rhodes OBE, Director of Strategy, Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships and Trustee of the Early Intervention Foundation will speak about what really works in family intervention, how to measure effectiveness and the major challenges to meeting needs. Dr Mike Davies, Consultant Psychotherapist, will speak about his work with highly vulnerable children, parents and carers, and deliver key messages for parenting support services. Professor Sarah Stewart-Brown, Professor of Public Health, Warwick University will speak about the importance of work on parenting for health throughout the life course and also on measuring wellbeing. (Cardiff only) Gwilym Roberts, CEO Relate Cymru will speak about Relate Cymru's work with parents and children including through Families First. Lynda Hill, Parenting Manager, Prevention and Early Intervention Team, City and County of Swansea will present a film about a family's story and Swansea's approach to parenting support.    We hope the event will increase delegates' understanding and give them the opportunity to consider their own policy and practice alongside sharing experiences and best practice. Building Resilience in Young People 3 November 2015, Cardiff - Online Booking Form   A one day course Why do some young people cope with difficulties more easily than others? What factors really make a difference to how we deal with adversity? What can practitioners do to make a difference? This one-day course explores how you can develop an approach that builds on strengths to help young people deal with adversity, cope with change, survive disappointment and manage crises. It will draw upon practice, research and theory. Above all, it will enable participants to reflect upon their experience and build on their own strengths. The course will include: Resilience, risk and coping - what do we mean Key resilience qualities for individuals and families Implications of the different coping styles of young women and young men Protective factors for individuals, families and communities The significance of emotional intelligence, problem solving and optimism Listening to young people and families and developing relationships of care Supporting connectedness  About the Trainer  Cris Hoskin has over 30 years' experience of working with young people, parents and families in a variety of settings. This includes working with young people and parents in mainstream school, specialist (EBD) school, child and adolescent mental health and in the Youth Justice System. She has also worked in the voluntary sector for a number of years managing projects nationally for the Youth Justice Board and the Home office. She has been delivering courses for a number of years on a part time basis. In 2010 Cris left her post as commissioning lead for parenting services in a Local Authority to become a full-time freelance trainer and consultant. Responding to Attachment Difficulties in School and Early Years settings 14 October 2015, Wrexham - Online Booking Form 10 November 2015, Cardiff - Online Booking Form A one-day course This course offers an in depth exploration of the nature of attachment formation difficulties and how early adversity will influence a child's ability to manage in early years and school settings. Highlighting the critical role that teachers and day care staff can play in supporting children with attachment difficulties, and their families, primarily through adopting an attachment-focused approach to their relationships with children, classroom management and responses to concerning behaviours. The course is suitable for all who work in early years and educational settings. The day will include: An overview of Attachment Formation Theory Consideration of the possible conflict between the goals of learning and attachment Discussion of different types of Attachment Formation Identifying attachment-related behaviours ~ in children and adults! Caring for and responding to children with attachment difficulties About the Trainers Veronica Grant Veronica worked as a social worker for many years and later as a children's advocate for children in need of protection, in the care system or facing exclusion from school. Over the years Veronica has provided training and consultancy to a wide variety of organisations from sports and faith groups, commercial organisations and organisations within the statutory and voluntary sectors. She has also undertaken a number of consultations with children and young people, some for Welsh Government, to inform reports and service provision. Veronica now works as a Play Therapist for children who have experienced trauma or are encountering emotional or behavioural difficulties. Gabrielle Eisele Gabrielle Eisele is a BAPT qualified Play Therapist and has been working with children and young people across the UK for over 30 years. Gabrielle has worked with children and young people in such diverse roles as specialist advocate for disabled children and young people, special needs development worker, Adviser for the Family Fund Trust, Portage worker, secondary school teacher, college and university lecturer, and child worker for Women's Aid, as well as providing training in all areas of child welfare and development, disability awareness and Autism across Wales. Gabrielle's academic background is in psychology, with a BSc (Hons), MSc in Psychology, Advanced Diploma in Positive Behaviour Support, MA in Developmental and Therapeutic Play and an MSc in Play Therapy. Understanding How to Safeguard the Welfare of Children and Young People - Accredited Level 3 Training through Agored Cymru 6 & 7 October 2015, Cardiff - Online Booking Form    A two-day course   This course is aimed at people who want to gain accreditation, whilst learning about the current challenges in child protection and how practitioners can work with others to increase the protective factors for children that they work with.  The course is appropriate for people working in a range of organisations including youth settings, schools, children's daycare and residential settings, also services providing support to children and families in the voluntary and private sector.  This two-day training will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss issues from practice, exploring the complex and sensitive nature of keeping children safe in a variety of settings. Participants will explore the roles of relevant partners, the importance of accurate record keeping and appropriate information sharing, taking on board when consent is required. Attendees will have the opportunity to consider what helps to make an effective referral when an organisation has concerns about the welfare of a child and what might be expected of them during the statutory child protection process, including core group meetings and case conferences. The course will focus on a child-centred approach to safeguarding, and will offer participants the opportunity to analyse essential work place practices and policies in relation to keeping everyone safe. The issues of e-safety and bullying will also be addressed as these have a direct link to the safety and well-being of children and young people.
