Cultural Awareness in Safeguarding Children 27 November 2015, Wrexham - Online Booking Form A one-day course Understanding cultural differences is an important component in effective working with families and children. Practitioners and managers can be reluctant to address child welfare concerns because they fear being accused of racism, intolerance or prejudice. Getting the balance right between cultural sensitivity and making Westernised judgements on child welfare is difficult. The aim of this course is to raise awareness of cultural, ethnic and religious identities when considering safeguarding issues within asylum seeking, refugee and migrant families. It will increase the understanding of particular safeguarding risks within families and communities and enhance confidence in addressing safeguarding issues with families. Responding to Attachment Difficulties in School and Early Years settings 14 October 2015, Wrexham - Online Booking Form 10 November 2015, Cardiff - Online Booking Form A one-day course This course offers an in depth exploration of the nature of attachment formation difficulties and how early adversity will influence a child's ability to manage in early years and school settings. Highlighting the critical role that teachers and day care staff can play in supporting children with attachment difficulties, and their families, primarily through adopting an attachment-focused approach to their relationships with children, classroom management and responses to concerning behaviours. The course is suitable for all who work in early years and educational settings. The day will include: An overview of Attachment Formation Theory Consideration of the possible conflict between the goals of learning and attachment Discussion of different types of Attachment Formation Identifying attachment-related behaviours ~ in children and adults! Caring for and responding to children with attachment difficulties About the Trainers Veronica Grant Veronica worked as a social worker for many years and later as a children's advocate for children in need of protection, in the care system or facing exclusion from school. Over the years Veronica has provided training and consultancy to a wide variety of organisations from sports and faith groups, commercial organisations and organisations within the statutory and voluntary sectors. She has also undertaken a number of consultations with children and young people, some for Welsh Government, to inform reports and service provision. Veronica now works as a Play Therapist for children who have experienced trauma or are encountering emotional or behavioural difficulties. Gabrielle Eisele Gabrielle Eisele is a BAPT qualified Play Therapist and has been working with children and young people across the UK for over 30 years. Gabrielle has worked with children and young people in such diverse roles as specialist advocate for disabled children and young people, special needs development worker, Adviser for the Family Fund Trust, Portage worker, secondary school teacher, college and university lecturer, and child worker for Women's Aid, as well as providing training in all areas of child welfare and development, disability awareness and Autism across Wales. Gabrielle's academic background is in psychology, with a BSc (Hons), MSc in Psychology, Advanced Diploma in Positive Behaviour Support, MA in Developmental and Therapeutic Play and an MSc in Play Therapy. By the end of the day delegates will: Be able to describe what an Action Learning Set is Understand how to structure Action Learning Sets Be able to identify the skills behind effective Action Learning Sets Have had the opportunity to practice these skills Have experienced an Action Learning Set Have been introduced the learning journal About the Trainer Deryl Dix started her career working as a drama specialist in Cardiff Council's creative arts team. She later took up a public affairs role within the heart health demonstration project 'Heartbeat Wales', before becoming the Wales Director of the Family Planning Association (FPA). She held this position for ten years and followed it with Director level posts with the RNID (Royal National Institute for Deaf people) and CSV (Community Service Volunteers). Whilst working for the FPA, Deryl gained a post-graduate diploma in counselling from the University of Wales. Further to this, she has both the introductory and intermediate level certificates in Family Therapy, a certificate in 'Group relationships and inter-personal skills', BPS (British Psychological Society) licensing certificates at level A and level B in psychometric testing and is an INLPTA certified practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). In 2000 Deryl established her own training and consultancy business. She now works with clients in a wide variety of roles across the private, public and voluntary sectors, focussing on the development of inter-personal skills including: Management and Leadership development, Team development, Sexuality & relationships, Diversity, Child protection, Communication skills, Coaching and Group facilitation. The ability to develop Supplier Qualification Information Database (SQuID) questions through the Excel wizard (Squizard) available on eTenderwales will be withdrawn on Friday 12th December 2014. Back in August we launched two further developments to the SQuID Online tool on Sell2Wales to provide greater functionality on our journey to full capability of buyer and supplier integration. The first development enables buyers to complete the Squizard on Sell2Wales and export their finished SQuID question sets to formats suitable for upload into eTenderwales. In August we advised users that the ability to run a Squizard within eTenderwales will be phased out within 3 months. The date has now been set for the removal of this functionality as Friday 12 December. The user guides on Sell2Wales have been updated to reflect these changes. If you have any technical queries please contact the Sell2Wales helpdesk on 0844 561 0672. Coach trip to visit 3 Adventure playgrounds in Wrexham, Tuesday 20^th May 2014

As part of an ongoing commitment to increasing, developing and sustaining quality play opportunities for all children and young people within Powys, you are cordially invited to join us on a visit to one of the most innovative, play friendly counties in Wales. We will be traveling, by coach, to Wrexham to meet the Local Authority Play Development Officer Mike Barclay and other key play staff members, and to visit three ground-breaking Adventure Playgrounds: The Venture which has been going for 30 years, Gwenfro which is smaller and established around 10 years ago, and The Land in Plas Madoc established last year. (Check out a videoforf The Land here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-24751534)

An adventure playground is a place where children can build dens or treehouses, make campfires, dig gardens, stage water fights, play in the mud and rain. It is a place that children should be able to call their own - where they can direct their own play, be spontaneous, loud, dirty, messy, silly, and where they can test themselves out against their environment and other people. Wrexham have fully embraced this philosophy and are exemplar at supporting each child’s right to play. 

Each Adventure Playground is different and each one raises some interesting discussion points on different ways of providing for play, managing risk and tackling issues of health and safety. It is widely documented that areas with increased play opportunities benefit from a reduction in crimes rates, higher community morale and increased standards of physical health and emotional wellbeing.

The visit is an opportunity for members of the Powys community to see first-hand how this type of play provision is managed and the possibilities that can be created around diverse Open Access play.

• 11.00-12.00 Travel a short distance across Wrexham to Gwenfro Valley to meet with Colin
• 12.00-1.00 Pub lunch and discussion with Wrexham staff members (We are, unfortunately, not able to include lunch in the day, please bring money for pub lunch or a packed lunch)
• 1.30-2.30 Travel to Plas Madoc (The Land) to meet with Claire

We would need to be out of the last setting by 3ish as that is when the children arrive and staff are busy. We will arrive back in Llandrindod at approximately 5.15pm

Please respond and confirm your attendance. Confirmation is needed sooner rather than later so we can confirm numbers with the coach company.

This course offers participants a broader understanding of how autism can impact on early development, play and social interaction. This deeper understanding can underpin positive and progressive relationships with autistic children. Strategies for promoting engagement, play and language development are explored, along with positive responses to behaviours found in autism that can challenge professionals and families. This course is for all those working with autistic children and their families who wish to deepen their understanding and enlarge their skills base with this cohort of children.
