GETTING TO GRIPS WITH CHILDREN AND FAMILY POLICY IN WALES

23 June 2016, Cardiff -

'Getting to Grips' is a one day course, which develops the themes of our highly successful 'Bigger Picture' half day workshops we delivered across Wales in December and January, through funding from the Welsh Government. The course will support people from a wide range of organisations to understand the distinctive Welsh lesiglative and policy framework for children and families, that has developed as a result of increasing devolution from Westminster.

The training will consider current Welsh legislation around children and families, Welsh Government policy and strategies on issues including how children's rights are being addressed through  initiatives on child poverty, health, social care and education. The course will explore Welsh government programmes including Families First, Flying Start, Communities First and Integrated Family Support considering the roles and priorities of different sectors involved in delivering these, and the challenges faced by everyone.

Play Wales Latest Edition: The importance of Risk

Take a look at Play Wales latest edition of their news/briefing.  It is full of helpful and challenging articles about play and risk.

Concerns over health & safety and behaviour have been raised in the Powys Play Sufficiency Assessment.  It means that children are not accessing their right to play.

What can we, as adults, do about this?  Have your say and lets discuss this.  Talk to children. Listen to children.

Join in with the debate.

Welsh Government Consultation: Supporting Learners with Healthcare Needs

Supporting learners with healthcare needs

We are seeking views on the revised draft version of the Supporting learners with healthcare needs guidance document.

The Access to education and support for children and young people with medical needs guidance document was originally published in 2010.
The revised draft version, now titled Supporting learners with healthcare needs, is shorter and takes account of changes to equalities legislation and new guidance on keeping Salbutamol Inhalers on school premises.
Medical conditions can have a lasting effect on children and young people’s social development, ability and confidence in educational attainment. It is important to ensure seamless support services are available to meet their needs and allow continuity in accessing educational opportunities at school, at home, in hospital, or another setting and in cooperation with parents/carers and the school the learner normally attends.
The current guidance document “Access to education and support for children and young people with medical Needs” provides advice and guidance on meeting the educational needs of children and young people with medical needs in the education setting.  The guidance offers advice on how schools formulate policies to support children and young people with medical needs.
The questions should be read in conjunction with the draft Supporting learners with healthcare needs guidance document, which replaces the Access to education and support for children and young people with medical needs guidance document.

Easter play days - date changes

Free of charge Play throughout Montgomeryshire this Easter

Play Montgomeryshire is starting up its fine weather play programme this Easter with free of charge play sessions throughout the Shire.

It all starts on
Tuesday 22nd March, when Bryn y Gog (Machynlleth) opens its play box doors at 11am to offer a wide range of play activities to local children. This project will run every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 to 3 in the holidays and from 4 to 6pm after school,  until the end of October. This project starts with an open day for registration on Saturday 19th March from 1 to 3pm. It is registering with the CSSIW so children 5 to 8 years old can stay without their own carers, and this day is all about the new system. Refreshments will be available.
Also on the Tuesday, and the following Tuesday, the regular Stay and Play session in Newtown Library will run from 1.30 to 3.30pm. Newtown Library will be reading  stories to the children from 1.30pm, and Play Montgomeryshire will be running a Stay and Play session for children of all ages from 2 to 3.30pm.  The Stay and Play craft session will involve craft activities, plus toys to play with and join in with their friends. As usual members (membership is free of charge) may buy craft materials to do their own crafts over the Holidays. All children are welcome to join us at these Play Sessions in Newtown Library - there will be something for all ages. On Saturday 26th March the regular end of the month craft session will also be happening in Newtown Library from 10.30 to 12 noon.

The Wednesday (23rd and 30th March) brings 2 outdoor Play Sessions  involving Den Building, Dressing up, Messy Play, Crafts, and fun and games.
The morning sessions, from 10 to 12, will be on Maesyrhandir (either in front of the school or outside the Youth Club) in Newtown; and the afternoon session from 2 to 4 pm at the Caersws Playground in Main Street.

The regular Stay and Play sessions in Machynlleth Community Church will carry on both Wednesdays in the Easter holidays, from 10 to 12 noon, and every week thereafter.
Finally on Monday, 28th March, at 2pm  the Oldford (in Welshpool) Play sessions start up down by Skansis Pitch. Amanda and her team will open up the large storage container filled with loads of play resources ready for an influx of children to come and have fun, this will continue every Monday and Thursday in the school holidays from 2 to 4pm and every Monday and Thursday after school from 4 to 6pm, even on Bank Holidays. This is also until the end of October.
Play Montgomeryshire is a registered charity, and it is thanks to generous funders they are able to carry out these acttivities free of charge

Drawing on the current research evidence base it will consider: the tensions of trying to protect a young person who may not want to be protected; the importance of working in partnership with young people; the significance of language (in how we describe young people’s experiences and talk about these issues) and the need to move beyond individual risk to a more systemic response.

WCVA - Criminal Records Unit

Following sector representation, the Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Lesley Griffiths, has agreed she is willing to extend the funding for the WCVA Criminal Records Unit until 30 September 2016.

This means that WCVA CRU can resume its DBS check access service and continue with the bilingual advice and guidance support for the third sector in Wales.

We are working with the sector to explore ways we can support safeguarding services in the longer term.
