Library Services - Survey have your say in October

Have your say on Library Services

Library users in Powys will be invited to have their say next month (October) as part of a national survey.
Powys County Council’s Library Service is taking part in a national survey to identify trends and gather a snapshot of customer opinion and needs.
Adult visitors to the council’s branch and mobile libraries may be asked to complete a survey asking for their views on opening hours, staff helpfulness, facilities and the quality of book, computer, multi-media and information services.
The survey, which will start on Monday 8 October and will last for about two weeks, is part of a national programme of information gathering required by the Welsh Government. Results will help the council identify trends and gather a snapshot of customer opinion and needs.
Cllr Myfanwy Alexander, Cabinet Member for Learning and Leisure, said: "We know that the people of Powys value their libraries, this survey will give us a chance to make the service even better in future."
The surveys will be available in both English and Welsh. Completed forms should be posted in the survey reply boxes in branch libraries. Pre-paid envelopes will be available for mobile library customers.
The survey was carried out in Powys in 2009, with over 4,000 Powys residents taking part.

Services for Deaf Children: Sign upto the e-petition

Dear Colleague,

As I am sure you know, we need 100,000 signatures to force a debate in the House of Commons about public service cuts which are leaving deaf children without the support they desperately need. A debate will compel ministers to explain what they will do to protect services for deaf children - similar petitions have generated massive publicity and ultimately changed government policy.

To make this happen, I need your help so together we can help deaf children.

Please you do two things to make this happen ?

2. Share it! Ask friends, family and other contacts to sign it and share it too.  You can do this by sending the email below to friends, family....or even everyone in your address book! Feel free to personalise the email as you wish. If you have any queries or need any help at all, please do contact the campaigns team jo.campion@ndcs.org.uk orjessica.reeves@ndcs.org.uk

Thank you so much to all of you who have already worked so hard to generate signatures. If we all just take 2 minutes to do this, I know we can achieve our 100,000 target. Just click onhttp://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34073

Many thanks in anticipation!

Best wishes

Susan

PS  Remember, the “multiplier effect” means that just 10 people forwarding to ten more, who forward to 10 more etc, means we could reach the 100,000 target in just 4 steps! Please - do it now, before it slips your mind. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34073

More money for ‘meic’

An additional £100,000 funding has been announced by Gwenda Thomas, Deputy Minister for Children and Social Services, to meet the growing demand on the children and young people’s advocacy and advice service 'meic'.
Since the helpline went 24/7 in January 2011, 8,734 children and young people have contacted ‘meic’. The service has faced challenges as the number of calls to the helpline have increased and the issues become more complex.
To ensure the demands for the service continue to be met, an extra £100,000 has been allocated until 2013. This demonstrates an ongoing commitment to advocacy, to support and enhance the service for children and young people across Wales.
Advocacy is a process which helps a child or young person to speak up for themselves, it can also include explaining, empowering, representing and navigating complex systems and procedures.
It’s not only about complaints and advice. While advocacy may sometimes include both, it is more about listening and ensuring the wishes and feelings of children and young people are heard by others regardless of whether the advocate agrees or not. By listening to children and young people they can be safeguarded better.
The Deputy Minister said:
“I am aware of the huge difference ‘meic’ makes to the lives of children and young people. Children and young people time and time again tell us about the value that they place on advocacy support and how it can change their lives for the better.
"I believe that providing advocacy and advice to children and young people can better safeguard them and prevent problems and issues from escalating further.
“Children and young people should expect to be protected from harm, to have education and things to do outside school, to be listened to when they are not happy, to have an opinion and be involved in decisions that affect them. It is our place to ensure that this happens.
“We have always held firm our belief that children’s rights are essential to improving outcomes for children and young people. To support this we have introduced a law that means that we have to consider children’s rights in all we do as Welsh Government.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of everyone involved with the 'meic' helpline.”

14-19 Learners - Good Practice links with Schools

Has your youth or community group had close links with schools to enhance the learning of 14-19 year olds, formally or informally?

Many schools across Powys work well with community groups and we are looking for examples of good practice.  This will help to share that experience and help key decision makers when designing services.

If you would like to share your experiences then please do contact PAVO, via the Help Desk.

You may, equally have found it difficult to work with schools.  What are the barriers do you think?  How could barriers be over come?

We would appreciate your input.

BBC One Show - Community Action Search!

BBC TV’s The One Show is looking for community projects across the UK that need a helping hand. We want to use our influence to galvanise volunteer efforts in different schemes for a new weekly feature on the programme in the coming months.

For example - Perhaps you have a community hall that needs a lick of paint and a good tidy up but haven’t been able to organise a volunteer day to sort it out - Let us see what we can do.
Has your local fireworks display/concert been forced to cancel? Maybe we can help.
Is your community bus service at risk unless more volunteers are found? Let the One Show spearhead the search to keep it going.
Or maybe you have a dedicated community stalwart who deserves a big thank you – let the One Show organise a suitable celebration.

We are currently at the early stages of planning this but please get in touch as soon as possible if you think you have suitable project or idea.

Email Richard.park@bbc.co.uk and mark your emails ‘One Show Community Action’.

Consultation Response: Young People with Additional Needs

PAVO has drafted a response to this consultation.  If you wish to see a copy and want to make your comments please contact the PAVO helpdesk.  We would welcome your input and give you the opportunity to have a say.

Forward in partnership for children and young people with additional needs: Proposals for reform of the legislative framework for special educational needs

Review of Powys Youth Services Strategy

The CYPP are undertaking a review of Powys Youth Services.

There will be an opportunity for wider consultation coming up in the very near futures.  However, before that consultation takes place we wish to undertake one to one interviews with organisations who work closely with young people, though are not providing a youth group setting.

Services could be supporting parents, children and young people for a wide range of purposes, eg: mental health issues, confidence building, housing, benefit advice etc.

The involvement would mean undertaking a short interview, probably over the phone, to gain ideas about what young people need and how services need to be delivered across the county.

If you are interested in taking part please leave a message with the PAVO helpdesk and we will be in touch with you.

Many thanks
