The teenage years can present the greatest challenges for parents and family members. Understanding the challenge young people themselves are facing provides both parents and professionals with the tools they need to allow teenagers to develop, whilst at the same time still keeping them safe from the worst excesses of teenage behaviour.

The course is for both practitioners working directly with teenagers, and those involved in family support services.

The course will include:
  • An exploration of teenage development
  • Why modern society makes this hard, and what can be done to support teenagers
  • The role of both mothers and fathers
  • Ways to improve communicationwith teenagers
  • Strategies to manage teenage behaviour

This course is relevant for managers and practitioners who wish to demonstrate that their intervention has made a difference. Budgets are tight and all organisations need to consider economy and efficiency, but it is important to keep focus on the effectiveness of services. This course will look at measuring the soft outcomes that your intervention has achieved for the people you work with. Participants will explore a range of methods that can be used with all groups - from children and young people to adults.

The course will include:
  •  Clarification of the terminology used when evaluating the impact of your services
  • An exploration of why you need to measure qualitative information and how to do it
  • Considering what soft outcomes are relevant to your setting
  • Exploring a range of methods for measuring soft outcomes
  • How to assess the distance travelled by users of your service
  • Using information on outcomes to improve service delivery

A half-day workshop facilitated by Children in Wales 
   
This workshop is designed for anyone delivering services to children, young people and families, who wish to reach and serve Welsh language speakers. The workshop will bring participants up-to-date with current legislation and the new proposed Welsh Language Measure 2010, and will look at where language rights fit into the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It will provide the tools and ideas to address myths and arguments around Welsh Language provision and language use. It will also equip participants with ideas and tools for increasing their own provision, no matter what your current capacity may be.

The workshop will include:
  • Exploring children, young people and families' language choices and developing services to meet their needs
  • How to work with Welsh speakers in an appropriate way
  • How to provide Welsh medium services with few staff and resources
  • Identifying current and proposed Welsh language legislation

Participants will learn about distinct Welsh policies that influence both national and local planning and relevant funding streams. There will be opportunities to share practice and network with others.

The course will include:
  • An overview of the political context and processes in Wales
  • Identification of key children and family policy in Wales
  • Clarification of the key differences between Welsh and English policies for children and families
  • An explanation of the local structures and priorities for planning children and family services
  • The implications of working in a bilingual country
  • An opportunity for participants to analyse the main threats and opportunities for their services

The aim of this training is to help those working with children and young people gain a deeper understanding of the functional nature of behaviours that we consider challenging, and identify positive and progressive ways of responding. The course will offer a practice-based forum to consider ways of working with children whose behaviour creates a barrier in social, learning and play relationships. It also covers behaviour in different ages and ranges of ability, underpinning the communicative nature of behaviour.
This course will include:
  • The functional nature of behaviour and working with the ABC framework of assessment
  • A variety of evidence-based strategies to respond to difficult and aggressive behaviours
