About the Trainers
Claire Sharp
Claire Sharp has worked with children and young people in the voluntary and statutory sectors for over twenty years and currently works as Children in Wales' Training Officer.

Claire spent many years working in the field of domestic abuse, directly supporting children and young people in refuges and in the community, before moving on to manage Children's Services at Welsh Women's Aid.

She has an ongoing interest in encouraging education and learning in its broadest sense, having worked both as a primary teacher and in the supervision and assessment of student social workers in child and family teams. Claire now trains practitioners from a variety of services on many issues, including children's rights and child protection. Claire has also delivered Early Support training, a programme aimed to improve recognition and support for disabled children and their families through a multi-agency approach with the child at the centre. Claire is a volunteer with UCAN Productions, a performance and creative arts co-operative for blind and partially sighted children, young people and their friends, supporting the children to have opportunities to play and socialise and develop skills and confidence.

Catherine Lewis
Cath has worked in social care for over twenty years and currently works for Children in Wales leading the organisation's work on disabled children and young people. Cath coordinates various forums, networks and seminars that bring together professionals from the voluntary and statutory sectors who work with disabled children and young people. She also facilitates seminars on disability related themes, such as autism and play, which include presentations from experts in the field and promotes the sharing of good practice. Cath is the Chair of the Third Sector Additional Needs Alliance (TSANA) which seeks to protect and promote the rights of children with additional needs in Wales. This involves regular meetings with the Welsh Government and Assembly Members to highlight what must occur to ensure children and young people with additional needs can access the support they need to reach their full potential.

Prior to joining Children in Wales, Cath worked as a social worker for the Family Link scheme in Bridgend and then as a social worker for disabled children in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Claire and Cath have devised and delivered previous courses on working with disabled children, including:
  • See Me Hear Me - Promoting the rights of disabled children and young people
  • Including disabled children in leisure provision - which was commissioned by Blaenau Gwent and delivered to all leisure staff in the county over a series of events.
