Dry January National Campaign

Dry January is a national campaign encouraging people to experience a month without alcohol, with nearly 4,500 people signing up last year. It aims to encourage people to experience a month without alcohol and ultimately moderate drinking habits.  

We hope you will join us in supporting this campaign by raising awareness of the campaign amongst the general public and staff groups.   There are display posters and leaflet available which can be aimed at the general public and in any staff rooms.

Playworkers across Wales are forging better relationships with local schools by supporting the non-curriculum part of the school day and promoting the right to play with children, young people and staff.

We are hosting a Playwork Approaches in Schools seminar on Thursday 20 February at The Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells.

The seminar will provide an opportunity to learn more about specific projects, network with other playworkers, and share good practice and experiences.

New information guide for parents on developmental delay

This much needed guide is for parents and carers who think their child is not developing as they ought to be, or who have been told that their child has developmental delay or global developmental delay.

It contains information on:

·                     How children progress in the early years

·                     What developmental delay is

·                     Why a child might be slower in development and how they can help their child

·                     Top tips from parents who have gone through similar.

It also contains a pull out poster with important milestones in a child's development - which would also be useful to display in clinics.

In the guide, the main message for parents is that support should be put in place early on to help a child with developmental delay develop skills. This should not be dependant on the child being diagnosed with a named medical condition.

After the Measles outbreak across large parts of Wales, including Powys, we heard a lot in the press about the dangers of Measles. But even then, not enough chose to take up the offer of the MMR vaccination. Unfortunately, this means that there are large numbers of teenagers in Powys that are currently unprotected against the disease.

We also need to remember that as well as protecting against Measles, the MMR protects against Mumps and Rubella as well.

The campaign, devised by young people, is in response to research conducted for us by the University of Cambridge that showed that 99 per cent of gay young people still regularly hear phrases like ‘that’s so gay’ and that 84 per cent of those young people are distressed by it.   We know that homophobic language has a devastating impact on gay young people’s self-esteem.  With your support, we’ve already been able to send our resources to over half of all secondary schools in Britain. But we know there’s still much more to do. We want to ensure that every secondary school can access our posters and new guidance for teachers and young people. Care Ambassadors for Early Years Workforce

Dear Dear Employer,

I have great pleasure in introducing the new Care Ambassador Project for Wales and the UK as a whole. The Care Ambassador Scheme is an idea designed by Denise Harrison and adopted by Skills for Care who has agreed for the four Regional Social Care Partnerships across Wales to adopt the idea in Wales

This will be a pilot project to run until March 2011 and we are now looking for a number of Care Ambassadors in Mid Wales.

We hope you are able to support this project by nominating suitable staff in your organisation to become voluntary Care Ambassadors as well as agreeing to release them to attend events as and when required. (This will be a maximum of twice a year for a maximum of 3 hours per visit – depending on the demand of the events, this may be less) In return, you can invoice SCiP for £20 per visit.

What is a Care Ambassador?

Care Ambassadors are workers within the care sector who have the passion and enthusiasm to share their experiences with others to change perceptions about careers in social care. We will offer training to develop your staff’s skills to carry out this role successfully.

Who can become one?

Social care workers at various levels of their careers who are committed and confident and able to communicate well with a wide audience. The Care Ambassador will be recruited on a voluntary basis.

The purpose of this project is to:

·         To educate as many people as possible of the opportunities available within the sector including the varied roles for both men and women - including career pathways/ career progression – via job fairs + school/ college visits

·         To raise the profile of social care as well as promoting the sector as an enjoyable, rewarding and successful career.

Benefits to employers

·         Career Development of staff - confidence and new skills acquired.

·         Better profile in the local community; being seen to contribute to the community

·         Raising interest among future generations as potential employees into the sector.

·         Low cost marketing to gain positive publicity

·         Chance to inspire new generation into the sector – sense of achievement

Annual ConferenceMaking more great and affordable childcare a reality We held our annual conference last week. Over 100 representatives from Local Authorities, Children's Centres, Family Information Services, childcare providers and other professionals working in the sector attended.The conference began with a keynote speech by Anand Shukla, Chief Executive of the Family and Childcare Trust, who argued that cost, affordability and access problems in childcare are systemic challenges that require a strategic response. Anand Shukla argued that investment in childcare will not resolve these problems unless accompanied by a vision and that this is lacking in the current political focus on childcare. He highlighted in particular the need to simplify funding and said that the Family and Childcare Trust would be publishing a report in the New Year looking at what can be learnt from the first ten years of childcare policy. Education minister Liz Truss set out the government’s approach to addressing the quality, affordability and access challenges in childcare, including reforming regulation and creating the tax-free childcare scheme. Liz Truss spoke in particular about the government’s desire to support more schools to provide wraparound childcare. Labour shadow children and families minister Lucy Powell argued that policy has failed to keep up with changes in family life and called for a ‘childcare revolution’. Lucy Powell argued that government should treat investment in childcare in the same way that it makes infrastructure investment and discussed Labour’s pledge to guarantee families childcare before and after school and extend the free offer to 25 hours. Panel and Q&A sessions during the day addressed the future of childcare funding; flexibility, innovation and information for parents; and promoting quality in the early years. Read all the presentations from the conference. Parent Champions Over the last month the Parent Champions project has held workshops for members of our network of parent-to-parent advice schemes. These have been a chance to provide network members with information and resources on supporting their volunteers and collecting evidence of the difference they are making in their local area. Thanks to everyone who has attended so far and shared great ideas with other network members. Unfortunately, our January workshop is full.
