We are piloting a process to find out if organisations working with children & young people in Powys are aligning the way they work to help support families in Powys.

You can now download a checklist to work through with:

• your volunteers
• your staff
• your trustees

to find out where you are on a scale from "Flying High"  to not even being on the starting blocks.  Most organisations will fall somewhere in between, ofcourse.

You don't have to do all sections.  Just concentrate on one area for development then move onto the next.

Draft Children’s Rights Scheme 2014

Arrangements for having due regard to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) when Welsh Ministers exercise any of their functions.

This consultation sets out the scheme to ensure that Welsh Government Ministers take due regard to Children's Rights and the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child when they exercise any of their ministerial functions.

The Welsh Government Contribution to the 5^th UK state party report for the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

The Welsh Government will be issuing Wales’ contribution to the UK State Party Report on progress made in implementing the UNCRC on 20^th November.  This gives us the opportunity to highlight the significant progress made and draw national and international attention to the direction we have taken to making the rights of the UNCRC a reality for all children and young people in Wales.

   The report will be  available on the Welsh Government website www.wales.gov.uk on 20^th November.

The voices of children and young people are often completely ignored. That is the message coming fromKeith Towler, Children’s Commissioner for Wales, as he launches his Annual Report and Accounts for 2012/13.

Children in Wales: Promotoing the UNCRC Across Wales

Children and Families Practice Exchange (South Wales) "Promoting the UNCRC Across Wales" When: Tuesday 10th September 2013, 10am - 12.30pm Where: Children in Wales, 25, Windsor Place, Cardiff  CF10 3BZ  What works for Youth Work? Focusing on the 'vision for a new national youth work strategy' and examples of how local youth services deliver to local need

Welsh Government are consulting on how to take forward a vision for a new National Youth Work Strategy for Wales which will deliver until 2018 - this event provides the opportunity to debate their vision with Welsh Government officers from the Youth Support and Guidance Branch and share what works at local level Youth Support & Guidance Branch, Welsh Government - a representative from the Welsh Government Department will talk through the consultation document. A discussion will follow around the consultation questions and attendees will be able debate the suggested vision for youth work in Wales. The club numbers have grown tremendously since the beginning as it promotes opportunities for young disabled people to socialise with their non disabled peers and vice versa. There is an open door ethos that provides an inclusive environment encouraging the participation of all young people who come along. Learn more about how this club has developed and barriers along the way. John Heffernan & Sue Mackie, Saturdays Youth Club, Pembrokeshire  - John and Sue are key players in a Families First funded pilot project to provide young people with youth club facilities on Saturday nights. The project see's 2 settings (youth centres in Fishguard and Pembroke) working together with the Young People's Counselling Service to provide a range of diversionary activities together with more targeted support for those who need it. Providing youth facilities on what are traditionally young people's 'party nights' hasn't always been easy, but has been successful! Amanda Everson- Award Manager for UnLtd in Wales - UnLtd's core business is to provide funding and support to people who want to make a positive difference - socialentrepreneurs. Alongside this we undertake and publish research on our work and that of the sector to inform, influence and support the ecosystem for these activists. For the past 6 years we have worked in partnership with Comic Relief managing a programme supporting 11-21 year olds across Wales to lead ventures that have a positive social impact on their communities whilst they develop personal skills, knowledge and networks. We are piloting a social entrepreneurship/enterprise training resource to support youth organisations and the education sector to further understand our work and help raise awareness and opportunities for young potential social entrepreneurs. The role of adults in children’s play

The role of adults in children’s play information sheet explores why play matters and what we can all do about it. It provides support for adults in understanding how they can best provide time, space, permission and materials for children to play. The information sheet also offers suggestions about how we should take action to promote and protect children’s right to play. The production of this information sheet has been funded by the Welsh Government to support the developments arising from the Play Sufficiency Assessments completed by each local authority in Wales. Children & Families Practice Exchange Reduce Harm: Substance Use & Misuse

Children and Families Practice Exchange (South Wales) "Promoting the UNCRC Across Wales" When: Thursday, 18 July; 9.45am - 1.00pm  Where: Lancaiach Fawr Manor, Gelligaer Road, Nelson, Treharris  CF46 6ER Miaow Miaow - it ain't no Pussy Cat! Working Together To Reduce Harm  from Substance Use and Misuse Mephedrone or 'Miaow Miaow' as it is commonly known is becoming easily available in many areas of Wales with related recorded offences increasing by 83% in 2011/12.  Young people and school children are a particular high-risk group as they appear to be more likely to take unknown drugs and more greatly influenced by peer pressure. This event will bring together agencies that are currently working in the field to combat substance misuse with the aim of informing practitioners of the current information and trends surrounding substance use and misuse and to share practice in supporting young people that they work with. Inspector Alex Chadd, All Wales Police Forces Substance Misuse Coordinator Inspector Alex Chadd is a South Wales Police Officer currently seconded to the Welsh Government's Department for Health and Social Services working in the Substance Misuse Department.  His work across Wales in the field of  New and Emerging Drugs involves liaison between  the four Police Forces and Operation Tarian.  His presentation will give an overview of the use of the drug Mephedrone with insights into Police enforcement activity and an overview of the local drug scene  and trends in substance misuse. Film Project - Jeff O'Reilly, Education Consultant Jeff is a former deputy head of Tredegar Comprehensive School in Blaenau Gwent. Jeff will be sharing his experiences over the last 30 years of working in the field of education in relation to substance misuse. More recently, Jeff has undertaken a piece of research throughout Blaenau Gwent with groups of 15/16 year olds. The stark and informative findings will be shared at the event where Jeff will explain how the journey from research to film project is progressing. Questions and discussions to follow. All Wales School Liaison Core Programme (AWSLCP) The Programme is funded by the Welsh Government and focuses on three main themes namely drugs and substance misuse, social behaviour and community and personal safety. The Programme is delivered by trained School Community Police Officers across Wales who provide supportive education by working in partnership with PSE teachers in schools. Currently the AWSLCP is delivered in all 4 Secondary and the 26 Primary schools in Blaenau Gwent by 2 School Community Police Officers. An officer from the programme will run a workshop that will focus in part on substance misuse recognition and also explore approaches to substance use and misuse education. CRI, Lisa Tibbs, Drug and Alcohol Youth Support Recovery Worker Lisa will inform attendee's about the support CRI DAYS offers for young people in Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent around substance misuse, information on making referrals and how they are processed, training/information for other professionals and multi agency partnership working. The Children & Young People's Partnership in Powys is looking to 

United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) online training course

This training course will help officials learn more about children and young people’s rights.

The Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure came into effect in May 2011.  This course is designed to help people understand how the new Measure will affect their area of work.

Alongside the full training we have also developed a 10 minute version. This is a snapshot introduction to the UNCRC and the Measure.
