Bill to introduce votes at 16

Y Bil Senedd ac Etholiadau i gyflwyno’r hawl i Bleidleisio yn 16 oed
Bydd yn rhoi'r hawl i bobl ifanc 16 a 17 oed bleidleisio yn etholiadau’r Cynulliad, gan roi llais iddynt ar benderfyniadau a fydd yn diffinio eu dyfodol. 

Mae hefyd yn cynnig newid enw'r Cynulliad i adlewyrchu ei wir statws fel senedd genedlaethol.

Wrth gyflwyno'r Bil, dywedodd Elin Jones AC, y Llywydd:

“Ar ôl ugain mlynedd, mae hwn yn gyfle euraidd i adnewyddu ein democratiaeth a sicrhau bod senedd genedlaethol Cymru yn ein galluogi i wneud ein gorau i’n hetholwyr heddiw ac i genedlaethau'r dyfodol.

Mae Elin Jones AC wedi ysgrifennu at bob cyngor ysgol yng Nghymru gyda phecyn adnoddau cysylltiedig ynglŷn ag ymgysylltiad pobl ifanc a’u trafodaethau ynghylch Pleidleisio yn 16 oed. Mae'r adnoddau ar gael i bawb drwy'r llwyfan addysg Hwb.

Bydd Elin Jones AC yn gwneud datganiad llawn yn y Cynulliad ddydd Mercher (13 Chwefror). Bydd y Bil yn destun gwaith craffu manwl yn sesiynau pwyllgor y Cynulliad yn ogystal â chan bob Aelod Cynulliad yn y Cyfarfod Llawn.

Senedd and Elections Bill to introduce Votes at 16

The Assembly Commission is proposing a new law to renew democracy in Wales. It will empower 16 and 17 year olds to vote at Assembly elections, giving them a voice on decisions that will define their future. 

It also proposes changing the name of the Assembly to reflect its true status as a national parliament.

In introducing the Bill, the Llywydd, Elin Jones AM said:
“After twenty years, this is a golden opportunity to renew our democracy and ensure that Wales’s national parliament enables us to do our best for our constituents today and for future generations.”

Elin Jones AM has written to every school council in Wales with an accompanying resource pack about young people’s engagement with and debate around Votes at 16. The resources are available to all via the Hwb education platform.

Elin Jones AM will make a full statement in the Assembly on Wednesday (February 13). The  Bill will undergo extensive scrutiny in the Assembly’s committee sessions as well as by all Assembly members in Plenary.
