Physical Disabilities/Sensory Loss Conditions Survey - NOW LIVE

Powys County Council/Local Health Board: Consultation 

Powys residents who have physical disabilities and/or sensory loss conditions and their families are being asked to take part in a survey to help shape the future of services provided for them.

A five year plan is being drawn up by Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board to focus on key priorities and services for residents in the county.  A first draft is due to be drawn up by December and views given in this pre-consultation survey will help shape and feed into this.

The survey is available on line at www.powys.gov.uk/haveyoursay until 16 November. Click on the title under the “pre-consultation” tab.  Arrangements have also been put in place with Disability Powys for anyone with a visual impairment to do the survey over the telephone. The number to call is: 0800 988 1691.

A forum was established a few years ago by the Council and Powys Teaching Health Board to allow us to get a better understanding of the issues facing residents with physical disabilities and sensory loss.  It is co-chaired by two Powys residents who continue to experience the challenges of living with specific conditions. 

Cllr Stephen Hayes, Cabinet Member for Adults Services said:

“The forum has been instrumental in informing and shaping our thinking and understanding around the services people with physical disabilities and/or sensory loss access or need to access. 

“Our five year plan will focus on such services and we would very much welcome any views and insights that individuals, families or professionals have about the draft priorities identified in the survey.  Issues such as having more choice and control and improving employment opportunities are just two of the priorities we’re keen to progress during the next five years.”

Independent board members vacancies

Dear Colleagues,

There are currently two vacancies for independent board members on the PtHB Board.

The two posts are for:

Independent Member (Capital Estates)

Independent Member (Community)

Independent Members will:

• Be expected to bring to the Board an independent judgement on issues of performance, key appointments, looking ahead and accountability;

• Contribute to the work of the Board based upon their independence, their past experience and knowledge, and their ability to stand back from the day to day operational management;

• Contribute and accept corporate decisions to ensure a joined up, robust and transparent decision making process by the Board;

• Be expected, in time, to fully understand the business through active involvement to enable the effective performance of the tHB;

• Work closely with other public, private and voluntary organisations and will make sure that the views of patients, carers and families are fully involved in helping to shape, develop and improve services.

The posts are for a minimum of four days per month and are paid £9,360 per year.

What Support is Available for Parents?

Please see the message from the Powys Strategic Parenting Forum.  To help plan services and to make sure that Parents/Carers can access the right support we need to know what is currently happening.  There is a short survey below to help find out.

Please do complete and let us know.  The information will be used to make sure that ALL parents/carers can access some level of support.  Organisations and agencies will be able to help signpost parents/carers to the right support available in their area.

Re: Parenting Support in Powys

We know that parents play a crucial role in supporting their children’s social and emotional development and in helping them to do well in school. We also know that access to parenting support benefits a whole range of parents. In Powys we are proud of the range of parenting support offered to our parents from a variety of agencies.

So that we can map out the support that is available to parents and be able to signpost parents to relevant support we would like to know whether you are currently offering any parenting support and, if so, the type of support you are offering. Knowing where the strengths and expertise are across the county will also help to avoid duplication of resources.

Powys Teaching Health Board - Chair- Advert

Neurological Conditions Delivery Plan

Powys teaching Health Board are in the process of developing a Neurological Conditions Delivery Plan for Powys in line with the National Delivery Plan published by Welsh Government on 8^th May 2014. The delivery plan has 7 themes:

1: Raising awareness of neurological conditions

2: Timely diagnosis of neurological conditions

3: Fast and effective care

4: Living with a neurological condition

5: Children and young people

6:  Improving Information

7: Targeting research

The development of the plan is being coordinated by Michelle Price, Consultant Therapist for Stroke and Neurorehabilitation. Workshops have already been run for health board staff, service users, carers and third sector organisations. Further feedback and information would be welcomed from service users, carers and third sector organisations on what is already being done to support people with long term neurological conditions, what gaps in services there are and also what knowledge and skills are available in the community to support the implementation of this plan. The plan will be published in September 2014.
