Participation Governance:  Clearer lines of accountability have been discussed.  Services are encouraged to undertake an Action Plan which is reflects the National Participation Standards and any commissioned organisation is expected to complete an Action Plan.  What support does your organisation need to develop participation of children and young people and/or demonstrate how you are already doing so?

Joint Assessment Family Framework (JAFF):  under the Delivery Plan JAFF has been reviewed and identified as in need to re-branding.  Any suggestions to make sure this is model of working is clear for children, young people, families, volunteers and staff?  Team Around the Family - TAF is frequently used in other areas across Wales but any suggestions welcome.  Look on the page:  "Support for Families - working with all agencies" for more information about JAFF.

Training available for Voluntary Sector Representatives

This is YOUR opportunity to help co-produce training and guidance on “How to be effective as representatives” with Local Authorities and Health Boards

Where:  PAVO office, Unit 30 Ddole Road, Llandrindod Wells

When: 24th March 2014, 9.30- 11.30 a.m. 

Who with:  Mandy Williams, Participation Cymru, is working with the Welsh Government and the Welsh Local Government Association to ensure the training is focused on individual needs and direction.

Audience:  People currently acting as representatives / voluntary sector representatives in Powys, OR people who wish to become representatives /voluntary sector representatives.

It is open to people involved in all sectors, such as Children and Young People, Adults and Older Adults across mental health services, health and social care.

What’s in it for you?

ü Training for Councillors (and Health Board Staff) on the role of individuals (“Service Users”) and voluntary sector representatives in scrutiny of council (and Health Board) business.  PAVO is helping facilitate YOUR voice being heard in directing this training.

ü Individuals and voluntary representatives will explore/detail understandings in relation to scrutiny, developing skills in influencing, representation and what is important to include in this training – helping change culture

ü National Participation Cymru training will then be offered across Wales – for individual and voluntary sector representatives based on your feedback

ü A free (special) training course to be delivered by Participation Cymru for you, involving Voluntary Sector and individual representatives in Llandrindod Wells May 2014 (provisionally 8^th May 2014).

Expenses can be paid to individuals who attend this planning meeting, but please contact Trish Buchan, as soon as possible, on 01597 822 191 or email trish.buchan@pavo.org.uk if you wish to attend as spaces are limited to ten places for individuals and Voluntary Sector Representatives.

The next meeting to focused on Infrastructure will be held on Monday 10th March.

This group looks to develop public funded agencies and organisations so that they can work effectively together to support families.  This may mean aligning some of their policies and procedures to make this happen.

Participation networks - February 2014 The theme of the February network events is public involvement in scrutiny  and there will be a speaker from the National Assembly for Wales’ Outreach Team and discussions about how your organisation can involve the public in your scrutiny work. We will also demonstrate a participatory technique, icebreaker and evaluation exercise. “Public engagement and scrutiny go hand in hand” – Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister for Local Government and Government Business Let’s get together and shine a light on scrutiny!  These regional participation networks are suitable for anyone working in the field of participation and citizen engagement. Attendees come from a range of different organisations in the public and third sector that focus on a variety of issues. The events are suitable for anyone from any level within an organisation that has an interest in practical participatory work, including consultation officers, trustees, volunteers, development workers and managers. Method of the month: PATH This method is used to engage individuals by planning for their ideal future, but it could also be used for groups. People are invited to a situation that works for them. They start with an ideal, before looking at how it contrasts with their lives at the moment, how they can stay strong and how they can reach this goal. They create a vibrant piece that uses graphics and possibly photos to show where they would like to be. It uses inclusive principles and person centred planning. It is versatile and could be used for business or community plans. It highlights the positive / possible and is very visual. It has worked well with individual clients in building a vision for their futures. Could also be used for families and community organisations. ( http://www.inclusion.com/path.html)

Resources Pembrokeshire Community Voice:  As part of the initial implementation of the Community Voice portolio, as a means of raising awareness of the various projects, Stronger Communities: Better Services had their own stand within the Community Zone at the Pembrokeshire County Show in August. Over the course of the three days, each of the project sponsors were represented on the stand, engaging with 107 adults and 51 children.  On the final day, a large number of these took part in a “wishes” activity run byspace2create, one of the portfolio partners, from which a video has been produced. Changing Faces Young People's Council

Changing Faces Young People's Council (YPC) are inviting young people, aged 13-25 who have a condition or injury that affects their appearance, to come and meet us in Cardiff in October. The YPC are meeting in Cardiff because they want to reach out to young Welsh people, to let them know what the YPC does and how they can get involved. They believe that with the right help everyone can learn to face their future with optimism.

Changing Faces is a charity for people and families whose lives are affected by conditions, marks or scars that alter their appearance. Aim:

To enable participants to understand their role as a potential catalyst for improved participation, by giving them skills and knowledge to help support community members when they interact with policy makers and service providers. 

 

Content: 

This course offers the opportunity to learn how to effectively support community members when they interact with policy makers and service providers.  Participants will consider why people participate, learn about different forms and levels of participation, identify barriers, how to plan to get started and support community groups, consider the tensions that can arise during the process and explore the success factors and challenges of the crucial role of broker between service providers and community groups.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course participants will be able to: 

• Understand the importance of involving community groups
• Describe how and why people participate
• Understand the key success factors when supporting community participation
• Be aware of how to support community members to identify and voice their needs
• Understand the tensions that can arise
