Cardiff Met Part Time Professional Qualifications (Degree and Post Graduate) in Youth and Community Work

There are still opportunities to study part-time on both the BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work and the Post Graduate Diploma in Youth & Community Work .  Both these courses are professionally endorsed by Wales ETS for youth work. We are also currently seeking professional endorsement for Community Development work with Community Development Cymru and hope to be able to offer this professional route from September 2016.

• Attendance is one day a week for the BA and one evening a week for the PG Dip.
• Many employers will support the day (or evening) release of employees to study on professionally endorsed courses such as these.
•  A 50% fee reduction can be obtained for practitioners undertaking the PG Diploma in Youth and Community Work for the coming academic year.

Update from Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges.

Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges met with Cllr Harris and Mr Simon Inkson last Friday to hear the good news that 4 families [8 adults and 10 children] will arrive in Powys during July and that 2 more families will arrive in the next few months. Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges asked that Broadband connections be ordered so that they are in place when the families arrive and agreed the group would pay for the first month. Does anyone had an old computer and/or TV that might be suitable to go into each house?  Please email Ailsa (hb ts4refugees@gmail.com) if you have either so they can make arrangements to pick up. 

For these families, who may have been in refugee camps for months/ years and who don't speak English, access to TV and computers will be essential to help learn about our language and culture and for them to be able to keep in touch with loved ones who are not with them.  Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges have contacted EYST who have the liaison role with these families.  Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges are offering these families place on their away day in Talgarth on 12th August.

In other news, Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges is awaiting news from Isabel of Help Refugees/ L'Auberge des Migrants about whether the convoy managed to reach Calais and if they still need blankets and tents. Isabel said they supply roughly 80 Welcome Packs (tent, sleeping bag, thick blanket, emergency food pack) per night and have recently not been able to open due to the shortage of aid. Blankets are apparently particularly difficult to obtain in Calais.  Recent fundraising will enable Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges to purchase some via  https://www.leisurefayre.com/section.php/86100/1/help_refugees.  This firm has agreed to give a discount to anyone ordering for refugees.

Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refuges plans to go to Calais for a week at the end of July and will take a transit van. They seek donations of:

Blankets
Men's socks
Men's shirts size small / medium
Small rucksacks
Toilet roll

They have no blankets in store so if anyone can spare some or think of where they could obtain any please help. Donations can be dropped at the Lib Dem's offices in Brecon  and St Mary's church in Hay. 

And the last bit of good news is that they had a wonderful evening at the Globe in Hay as part of Welsh Refugee Week and raised just over £800 for Syria and Shelterbox!!!   More details will be on our Website shortly.  Shelterbox provides essential shelter for people who are still in war torn Syria. Each Shelter kit contains tough tarpaulin can be used to restore roofs and walls and clear plastic sheeting can be used to cover broken windows, 5 blankets and mattresses for warmth and can also be used as room dividers to create privacy, solar lamps as a source of light to places without electricity and water carriers to enable people to collect and transport water from safe sources. Each ShelterKit being sent to Syria costs about £90 so this donation has enabled 9 kits with survival essentials to be sent to Syria helping countless people caught up in the conflict. Thanks to all who came and helped to make it such a fun night.

Launch of Comic Relief's New Core Strength Programme (UK)

Comic Relief has launched a new £4 million fund that will provide core funding for charitable organisations in the UK that deliver services in one of Comic Relief's programme areas.

The Core Strength Programme is provided by Comic Relief. It is partly funded by HM Treasury's 'Tampon Tax' to help tackle the various issues that many women and girls face.

Through the Programme, Comic Relief wants to recognise the importance of local community organisations and the pivotal role they play across the UK.

For the first time Comic Relief is providing grants for core costs, which are defined as the core costs of running an organisation. This includes salaries, overheads and day-to-day running costs such as rent, heating and lighting. Grants can also be awarded to support specific work that will strengthen organisations for the future. This could include improving leadership and governance, or planning and development.

Examples of the kind of work that might receive funding through this programme include:

• Strategic planning and policy improvement, including business planning, fundraising strategies, income generation, policy and procedure reviews.
• Planning to improve structures and systems that will improve efficiency and quality, including financial controls, human resources, management of volunteers, risk management, monitoring frameworks, impact assessment and accredited quality marks.
• Improvements in leadership and governance, including review of board/committee policy and practice, Trustee training, involving users, change management and new skills development eg around social entrepreneurship.
• General running costs, including rent, lighting, heating or contributions towards salaries.

Grants of up to £40,000 over 24 months of activity (£20,000 each year) are available. It is expected that about 100 organisations will receive funding.

Charitable organisations in the UK are eligible to apply as long as they have a turnover of between £100,000 and £500,000. They must be delivering services in one of Comic Relief's programme areas (at least 75% of an organisation's activity must fit one of these themes):

• Investing in children and young people.
• Empowering women and girls.
• Improving health and wellbeing.
• Building stronger communities.

The deadline for applications is 27 July 2016 (midday).

CEO vacancy at The Bracken Trust

The Rural Community Development Fund (RCDF

The Rural Community Development Fund (RCDF) offers grants which are primarily aimed at LEADER Local Action Groups and other community-based organisations.

The grants will provide investment funding for a wide range of activities to help meet local needs and strengthen communities so that they can grow and thrive.

Key areas for support will include:

• drawing up of community / village development plans
• investments in small scale infrastructure including renewable energy
• investments in ICT including broadband and digital inclusion
• improving access to services such as childcare, rural transport and  financial advice
• investments in recreational, tourist infrastructure and activities to improve health and quality of life.

There has been one Expression of Interest round for the Rural Community Development Fund (closed 31st January 2016).  The second EOI round is open until the 30th June 2016.

Active Inclusion events

Funding opportunities for those offering employment support to young people and the over 25s

Come to one of WCVA’s free events happening across Wales to hear about new funding from the Active Inclusion (Youth) Fund.

Any organisations that can offer activities, qualifications or supported employment to young people who are not in employment, education or training, are invited to apply to WCVA’s Active Inclusion (Youth) Fund.

The fund is supported by the European Social Fund through Welsh Government, managed by WCVA and will operate in the West Wales and Valleys region.  It is very similar to the Active Inclusion funds already open for over 25s, but this fund will focus on 16 - 24 year olds, particularly those young people who are furthest from the labour market and have multiple barriers to employment.
