What do chidlren in the UK spend their money on?

Children aged 15 years spent more than three times that of a seven-year-old, new data have revealed.
Spending data for the financial years 2015 to 2017 show that, on average, 15-year-olds spent £25.00 a week, compared with seven-year-olds, who spent £7.40.
Children aged between 7 and 15 years were asked to keep a diary of everything they spent their money on within a two-week period, from pocket money, gifts or through a job such as a paper round.
The information collected and published as part of Family Spending shows for the first time since 2004 how children behave as consumers.

Children in Wales - Data Protection - the implications

Wednesday, 14 March 2018
9.30am - 11.00am
Children in Wales, 25 Windsor Place

You are invited to attend a Question & Answer session, co-ordinated by Children in Wales and Wales' Information Commissioner's Office, around the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The GDPR is a European Union directive and its basic objective is to enforce stronger data security and privacy rules, among organisations, when it comes to protecting personal data. The law comes into effect in the UK from 25 May 2018 and ensuring that all the data you collect about individuals and making procedures GDPR-compliant may be a lengthy process.

So, to help understand the key elements of the GDPR and to answer any questions that you may have around its practical application, we are delighted to confirm that Bethan Bonsall, Lead Policy Officer at the Information Commissioner's Office, has agreed to attend this seminar. Please make every effort to attend as the session will be worthwhile.
PLACES ARE LIMITED TO 30 DELEGATES so please follow this link to book your place:

Call for evidence - Young Adult Carers

Support for Young Adult Carers in Wales – a Call for Evidence

From the Learning and Work Institute

We are currently gathering evidence of the support available for young adult carers in Wales.

Young adult carers are young people aged 16-24 who provide unpaid care to someone, usually a member of their family, on a regular basis. Young adult carers may have specific needs as they transition from school to further education, employment and training.

This research is an important step towards better understanding the needs of young adult carers in Wales and the support currently available to them. The resulting report will provide recommendations for improving policy and practice in this area.

Who Should Respond?

We are seeking responses from organisations directly involved with supporting young adult carers in Wales, including (but not limited to):

  • A carers service
  • A college
  • A training provider
  • A HE institution
  • An employer
  • A support service
  • A local authority
  • A charitable/voluntary organisation

The questions are routed depending on what kind of organisation you belong to.
Please take note of this if you are completing the word document version of the call for evidence.

Why take part?

This is a great opportunity to contribute to policy and practice concerning young adult carers in Wales. In doing so, you are ensuring the right support is in place to help young adult carers’ overcome barriers to progression into employment and further education.

Please respond to our online call for evidence by Wednesday 28th February 2018.

For more information please contactcalvin.lees@learningandwork.org.uk.

Between September 2015 and March 2016, Qualifications Wales conducted a review of qualifications in the Health & Social Care and Childcare sector. One of the recommendations of the Review was to develop a new suite of Health & Social Care and Childcare qualifications for Wales.  Work on creating the new approval criteria for the new qualifications began in September 2017.  As part of this development work, we are engaging with experts from the sector to ask for their feedback on our proposals.  We will be doing this via a series of Wales wide events for practitioners, employers, training providers, teachers and lecturers, in which we will be sharing aspects of the approval criteria.  In February 2018, we will be holding events focusing on the following qualifications:
(Level 4) Leadership and Management of Children’s Care, Learning Development and Play: Principles, Theories and Contexts.
(Level 4) Children’s Care, Learning Development and Play with Specialism.
(Level 5) Leadership and Management of Children’s Care, Learning Development and Play: Practice.
We will also be asking attendees to consider the support and resources needed to deliver the qualifications from September 2019.  We will then use the feedback from the sessions to strengthen the Approval Criteria ready to be published in March 2018.
Details of how to book onto these events are provided in the following link:
Following the engagement carried out by Qualifications Wales, the awarding body Consortium of City & Guilds London Institute and WJEC will carry out further engagement in regard to what the assessment should look like, what the full subject content of the qualification should be and any other deliverability considerations. The Consortium will communicate these engagement events to stakeholder in due course.
