This week's updates from WCVA

17 December 2018
Hello and welcome to the last WCVA Newsletter of 2018!
It's been a whirlwind year, and despite some challenges across the sector we're incredibly proud of everyone's work over 2018. We hope that we can all band together over the coming year to help achieve our shared vision of a thriving third sector in Wales, improving wellbeing for all. If you'd like to catch up with everything we got up to in 2017-18, please take a look at our Annual Report.
A brand new funding website has been launched by Third Sector Support Wales to help third sector organisations find funding more easily. The free database hosts a range of different funding options - with a search facility to help you to quickly and effectively identify relevant sources of funding. The site also includes news items and case studies, as well as links to support, information and guidance which will ensure that you're equipped with all the tools needed to make good funding applications. Visit funding.cymru to find your funding today!

Kellie’s volunteer story

Kellie started with Green Days through Treforest Learning Curve. When she first came to one of our activities she lacked self-confidence and made it quite clear to staff that she definitely wouldn’t be able to do any of the things we might ask her to do. To her intense surprise and pleasure she quickly proved herself wrong!

New report by paediatricians encourages imaginative play to support children's development

Play Wales report that according to a new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the best toys for young children’s development are not expensive or digital, but simple toys that encourage the development of new skills.
The Selecting Appropriate Toys for Young Children in the Digital Era report advises parents to choose toys that encourage creativity, communication and physical activity in young children.
In the report, The APP also offers examples of ‘appropriate’ toys – which includes loose parts:
‘… toy blocks, in addition to household objects, can be interesting for a child to examine.’

New Information sheet from Play Wales - Free resouces

Sourcing free materials for children’s play, or scrounging as it’s also known, is a must for everyone supporting children’s play. Children benefit from having lots of stuff to play with. Having resources and materials available to play with greatly increases the possibilities within any place where children are playing and why pay for them, when with imagination, they may be available for free.

Here is the link to the sheet:

Cnsultation on use of illegal drugs

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed Powys has commissioned a piece of work to be conducted by his office, looking into the way in which Illegal Drugs are being tackled across Dyfed Powys. This piece of work will conclude with the presentation of a report to the PCC’s executive team, as well as to the Chief Officer Team within Dyfed Powys Police, with a view of testing whether the way in which resources are used to address illegal drug use is as effective as it could be.

Part of this work will look to gain the views of certain groups of individuals including service users, youth engagement, as well as wider public engagement. In order for this survey to receive as many submissions as possible, the links below to both the English and Welsh versions of the public consultation survey pleasse would you  be kind enough to circulate this within your networks. There are very few questions and therefore is not a lengthy survey to complete, but will give an important view of the public on how prevalent illegal drugs are in their communities and how this affects them.

Many thanks in advance of your support in this matter.
