Practitioners and managers can be reluctant to address child welfare concerns because they fear being accused of racism, intolerance or prejudice. Getting the balance right between cultural sensitivity and making Westernised judgements on child welfare is difficult. The aim of this course is to raise awareness of cultural, ethnic and religious identities when considering safeguarding issues within asylum seeking, refugee and migrant families. It will increase the understanding of particular safeguarding risks within families and communities and enhance confidence in addressing safeguarding issues with families. The course is for anyone working with asylum seeking, refugee or other BAME migrant families, in statutory, social care, health or education, community groups and refugee community organisations, including Flying Start, Families First, Communities First, IFST, etc... This course will include: Child protection through a cultural lens Cultural perspectives on parenting in immigrant families arriving in Wales Female Genital Mutilation, 'Honour' Violence, Forced Marriage, Abuse Linked to a belief in Witchcraft Promoting positive parenting in immigrant families  About the Trainer Cheryl Martin has worked with asylum seekers and refugees over a number of years and developed this course from her experiences of working with families and safeguarding children within a cultural context. She has previously worked as Children's Services Manager at Welsh Women's Aid, the national umbrella organisation for domestic abuse in Wales and has experience of delivering training in a youth justice setting. Cheryl is a qualified counsellor and conflict resolution practitioner, working as an independent mediator for a number of years. She has been a Trustee and chair of two charities over the past 12 years. As a Level 3 Accredited Trainer Cheryl has delivered training in different settings to a wide range of audiences, including multi-agency training, statutory and voluntary agencies and professionals. The website contains lesson and assembly plans, life stories specifically developed for this year’s theme along with advice on films, books and lot lots more. This year we have developed a set of recipe cards if you fancy some cultural cooking. If you need help in trying to find something specifically please let me know and I will try and help.

The ABC Model to  dynamic risk management   This guidance paper provides a summary of a detailed risk-benefit assessment that considers common but potentially hazardous play behaviours displayed by children during staffed play sessions. Play Wales, in partnership with Simon Bazley (Playful Futures), worked with Wrexham’s Play Development Team to develop an approach to behaviour based risk-benefit assessment.  Further work between the play development team and staff from The Land adventure playground has led to the development of The ABC Model for the Dynamic Risk Management of Common but Potentially Hazardous Play Behaviours. The guidance paper is intended to support dynamic risk assessment by practitioners when working with playing children. It recognises that, whilst children’s play behaviours can be complex and present themselves in many different forms, the ways in which serious harm might occur are likely to be similar across different forms of behaviour. For example, the ways injury could occur, and the factors that practitioners need to take into consideration, are likely to be similar whether children are climbing a tree, swinging on a rope or sliding down a mud bank. As a result we have developed guidance to support risk-benefit assessment that can be applied to a wide range of behaviours – rather than having many different activity-based assessments that in practice duplicate one another. This guidance is intended to complement other risk-benefit assessment systems. It is written by Mike Barclay (Wrexham Play Development team), Simon Bazley (Playful Futures) and Dave Bullough (The Land) and published by Play Wales. An opportunity to express your views on the approach to developing a new suite of Health and Social Care and Childcare (including playwork) qualifications [Levels 1-5].

Dear Colleague, 

In July 2016 Qualifications Wales published its report on the sector review of qualifications and the qualification system in Health and Social Care (including Childcare and Playwork). In the report Qualifications Wales committed to overseeing the development of a new suite of qualifications to meet the needs of learners in Wales. 

Having considered how it might best meet this commitment Qualifications Wales is now considering imposing a ‘restriction’ on a new suite of qualifications for the sector. Should it choose to follow this course of action, from September 2019 only one approved version of each of those qualifications would be approved for use on funded programmes of learning in Wales.

Qualifications Wales has produced a consultation document to explain the options being considered. The consultation document and survey questions can be accessed here.

This consultation is an opportunity for awarding bodies, learning providers and any other interested parties to provide feedback on their preferred approach. 

Play Wales is keen to encourage a considered response from everyone in the playwork sector as these proposed changes could have a significant impact on the delivery and attainment of playwork qualifications in Wales. Furthermore the decision in Wales could in the longer term, have an impact on the playwork sector throughout the UK

Direct Payment Support Specification Design Workshop

This workshop is for service users, carers and family members only. The workshop is an opportunity for all stakeholders to review and shape the future service specification for direct payment support.

This forms part of a wider recommissioning project which is looking to recommission the service with a service live date of 1st April 2017. All stakeholders are welcome to attend the workshop to feed into and help develop the specification.

Action on Hearing Loss Cymru and RNIB Cymru  Focus Group For Powys

Do you have an experience of accessing your local GP surgery that you would like to share?

 Action on Hearing Loss Cymru and RNIB Cymru are looking for people with sensory loss to tell us about their experiences when using their local GP surgery.

They are forming local focus groups where you will have an opportunity to share your experiences with local heath board professionals. This is a chance to highlight the great service you have experienced or to help to address problems you have faced in accessing GP services. This is a unique opportunity to make positive change for people with sensory loss living in Wales.

Focus groups will meet a minimum of three times in their local area. Reasonable travel costs and refreshments will be provided for focus group members.
