Young I Matter We Matter - Children In Wales Consultation

Young I Matter We Matter
Children in Wales is looking for organisations and agencies who work with children and young people to enable them to engage with the future of socialservices.
The consultation document on the Social Services (Wales ) Bill (issued in March 2012) proposed "a statement of national outcomes for social services and socialcare services." Children in Wales is a member of the I Matter We Matter group of National Alliances brought together by WCVA to work with the Welsh Government to ensure that the Outcome Framework is created through a national wide-scale discussion with those who use Social Services.
I Matter We Matter wants to hear the views of all those who want to improve organisations, services and communities to ensure that people have choice, control and a feeling of mutual well-being and independence. This will include those receiving support now and those who might do in the future as well as those who support others.
I Matter We Matter is asking people:
  • What are the things that are important to you in your life?
  • What helps you to do these things?
Children in Wales is facilitating Young I Matter We Matter which is collecting of information about what matters to children and young people. To do this we would like to hear :
  • From organisations or groups who are in a position to talk to children and young people about the I Matter We Matter questions
  • About any previous work that has been undertaken with children and young people to find out their view on these issues, or any other materials you think would be relevant
We will be collating this information between November 2012 and January 2013. During February there will be a process for pulling all this information together and there will be an opportunity for common themes to be shared.

Playing Games at Christmas
Do advergames change the way children buy things? Why should parents be worried?

We have just launched our campaign to raise awareness of how manufacturers use advergames to advertise their products to children by stealth. The Code of Practice on Advertising states clearly that ‘adverts must be obviously identifiable as such.’ So children should be able to tell that a game is being used to advertise a product or a brand. However, our new review of the research on children and advergames found that most children under 10 (as well as a lot of adults) don’t understand that an advergame is actually an advert.  Read the full report here
Troubled Families and intervention
The head of the Government’s Troubled Families programme, Louise Casey, has endorsed family intervention as the most effective way to turn problem families around and help them get on in life.
Working with Troubled Families: a guide to evidence and good practice is a new report published this month which outlines key ways in which family intervention is shown to reduce involvement in anti-social behaviour and crime - as well as truancy, exclusion and bad behaviour at school. It goes on to discuss the main features of effective family intervention.
The full report, which is based on academic evidence as well as consultation with both practitioners and families, can be downloaded here
Family Policy Digest
This month’s Family Policy Digest includes:
·         Reactions to the Autumn budget statement as it affects families;
·         Family trends identified in the 2011 Census figures;
·         The impact of housing supply on young people
·         And much more.

Supporting Families Together

Training Available during January

Don't forget that there are a number of training courses coming up in January that staff and trustees working with children & young people should be attending.

They all support the Joint Assessment Family Framework (JAFF) which is made up of upto 3 stages:
  1. The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) form is the access or referral form completed by a practitioner with a parent/carer and the child, or young person.
  2.  The CAF goes to a multi-agency panel (The Local Resource Solution Panel) for discussion and solutions are agreed as part of a plan for the family.
  3.  A ‘Team Around the Family’ (or ‘Team Around the Young Person’ if they do not have family) meeting is then arranged involving those directly working with the child/young person/family to review, monitor and add to this plan.
Training is available which covers:

  • Common Assessment Framework and Local Resource Solution Panels - an introduction
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Information Sharing to Support Integrated Working
  • Lead Practitioner: Team Around the Family & Local Resource Solution Panels

You will find the details of dates and venues for this training on the page: "Multi-Agency Integrated Working".

CYPP Tenders Update

FREE Play Work Training Available starting 18th January

Exciting Level 2 Play Work Training will be running in January.

Starts 18th January on Fridays (not during Feb Half Term).

At Elan Valley Visitor Centre

Plenty of access to the outdoors for fun practical activities.

Exact details of the course content and structure can be found on the Play Wales website in the P3 section.

It comes in  3 parts: the Award, Certificate and Diploma.

In order to be qualified to practice the full Diploma is needed, however each part is also a qualification in its own right.

The Award will be delivered first and will involve 5 days of taught time, an observation of your practice in a play setting, and guided learning/coursework.

Please note that it is our intention to support all learners through to Diploma level but the timescales for drawing down the funding are very tight, necessitating fast progress through the 3 parts of the course.

If you would like a place then please complete and return the registration form to Dyfodol-Powys-Futures:

If you have any questions please get in touch. Watch this space for information on other playwork training, including the level 3 Diploma.

Update from Children & Young People's Partnership: Co-Location & Spatial Strategy

The December meeting of the Children & Young People's Partnership Officer's Group focussed on developing opportunities for Co-location of services.  Invites were sent round widely, including third sector organisations, to attend.  There was a good level of engagement from third sector organisations present.

There were a number of short, but very useful, presentations from a number of people which covered processes of identifying capital need and development.  There was also much discussion around the need for clear governance and strategic planning at a more local level ie: think of mini-CYPPs across the county.

You can find some summarised notes to the meeting via the link below.  If you wish to see some of the power point presentations we have copies available we can send onto you.  Please get in touch if you wish to discuss further.

Link to notes taken at the meeting (not the minutes of the meeting, though!).
