‘Making the best use of the space that we’ve got’
– A conference to explore what’s possible
Wednesday 19th September
During times of continual challenge to maximise resources for our residents, communities and visitors –collaborative work between services, organisations and partners to achieve outcomes for mutual and universal benefit is key. We have an incredible amount of ‘space to play’ in Powys – but how do we make best use of it?
Everyone needs to play - it’s not just for children………We need you!
…planning….highways….education / schools service….regeneration…. leisure…youth services…libraries…. countryside….children & adults services…housing…outdoor recreation…policy makers…directors….members… partners…suppliers... contractors…arts….museum …town & community councils….commercial services…property services…health services…regulatory services...3rd Sector Organisations
Play is an essential element of life – making it a fundamental component from birth right through to older age and is a cross-cutting theme for all services, is integral to health and well-being and many other organisations and partners. You may not consider ‘play’ to be within your remit or concern, however it is surprising how it links to nearly every other agenda e.g. planning a new housing development or designing a new road or school, dealing with behaviour, mental health or work-related stress. The requirements and benefits of play should not be underestimated or dismissed.
Supporting the national theme of ‘Play in Public Space’, this conference is designed to provide the arena to explore, discuss and raise important issues relating to existing and potential spaces ‘to play’ throughout the County, whether in parks, streets, schools, the countryside or future developments. We recognise and appreciate that creating ‘new’ or agreeing to big ideas is not possible, so we need to consider the existing space that we have - and make the best use of it.
Keynote speakers , including Tim Gill ( Rethinking Childhood) and Marianne Manello (Play Wales) will provide insight into industry specific research and evidence. Workshops will enable the necessary discussions to review and shape the Sufficiency Assessment process and development and agreement of the Action Plan. Case Studies and examples of where funding has already benefited services, communities, children, young people and their families will be shared.
Powys as a local authority has a Statutory Duty to undertake regular Play Sufficiency Assessments and produce an annual action plan to demonstrate the opportunities and facilities available. The Welsh Government’s bold step in legislating for play is embedded in its rights-based approach to policy making for children and is included in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) General Comment No.17 on Article 31.
We value your input and contribution and hope that you will join us on Wednesday 19thSeptember 2018 , The Pavilion, Llandrindod Wells. Please confirm your attendance by return email to play.in.powys@powys.gov.uk Please advise of any access, communication or dietary requirements.
We look forward to seeing you on the 19th September!

New Deadline for applications 31st August!
BBC Children in Need Funding Surgery
PAVO is pleased to announce that two days of pre-booked appointments have been organised in collaboration with BBC Children in Need. The opportunity to access this very popular funding programme is open to voluntary and community groups that work with disadvantaged children and young people. Groups serving POWYS will be able to apply for a 30 minute appointment with James Bird, a BBC Children in Need grants officer, to discuss the eligibility and potential of a project proposal.
Surgeries will be held on Friday 21st September in Ystradgynlais from 10am – 1pm and Brecon from 3pm – 7pm, and on Monday 24th September in Llandrindod Wells from 10am - 1pm and Newtown 3pm – 7pm. There will be a maximum of twelve appointments available each day.
To apply for an appointment please forward an outline of your project proposal (no more than one side of A4), preferably by e-mail, to diana.berriman@pavo.org.uk with your preferred location and second choice. Applications must be received by Friday 31st August. Places are limited so please apply ASAP.
BBC Children in Need supports stable, well-managed, and effective organisations that work with disadvantaged children and young people aged 18 years and under living in the UK (groups that work with people of all ages may also apply as long as the project is focused on work with those aged 18 and under). Disadvantaged children and young people include those affected by:
· illness, distress, abuse, or neglect;
· any kind of disability;
· behavioural or psychological difficulties;
· living in poverty or situations of deprivation.
The application should focus on the children your project will work with and the differences that your project will make for them. You should be able to clearly demonstrate the link between the disadvantage and how your project will change the lives of the children involved for the better. Where possible it should take into account their views and involve them in decisions that affect them.
BBC Children in Need funds two types of grants The Small Grants Programme is for grants up to and including £10,000 to support projects for up to three years. The charity’s Main Grants Programme is for grants over £10,000 per year to support projects for up to three years. All projects funded by the charity must demonstrate a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged children and/or young people under the age of 18. Our funding is accessible all year round with 3 Main Grant deadlines in January, May and September and 4 Small Grant deadlines in March, May, September, and December.
Like many funders BBC Children in Need has a list of work that it will not fund as follows:
· overseas projects or trips;
· medical treatment/research;
· unspecified expenditure;
· deficit funding or repayment of loans;
· retrospective funding (projects taking place before the grant award date);
