Could you be part of a pilot Teen Scheme?

A multi-agency group is currently working to pilot a ‘teen scheme’ for children with additional needs in Mid Powys. It’s likely that the scheme will operate for a period of the summer holidays and will include a mix of activity sessions and more formal childcare-like support for young people aged 11-18. The details are still being worked up, but at this stage we’re requesting whether any service areas would be interested in delivering a session to the young people so we can gauge what support might be available. If you think you might be able to and would like to find out more, please contact Powys’ Family Information Service fis@powys.gov.uk

BRAVE EIP film " Strength against Abuse"

Calan DVS has recently launched a new animated film ‘Strength Against Abuse’ which has been created by our lottery funded project BRAVE EIP,  to support children and young people exposed to domestic abuse.

This animated film, a result from a participation project , sought to give the young people participating a voice on the topic of domestic abuse. The young people chose to translate their views and opinions into  a 10 minute film, and had creative influence over its content and appearance.

The film is set out into five parts.
1.    Introducing the participants and introducing the domestic abuse topic.
2.    How do we make sure everyone knows about domestic abuse.
3.    What did you think about and consider before you got help.
4.    What do you need to happen when you experience domestic abuse.
5.    Ending with last minute advice and sign posted contacts of further support.

Recharging Rural

The Prince’s Countryside Fund has appointed Professor Sarah Skerratt of Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) to conduct vital research into what can make rural communities in the UK sustainable, in spite of the adversities they face.
We want to find out the different ways in which the challenges of ‘remote rural’ are being experienced by people and communities across the UK.
Participants are encouraged to fill in the survey regardless of their location in the countryside – whether they live and work somewhere traditionally seen as geographically remote, or places considered ‘within easy reach’ of towns and cities but that feel remote owing to a lack of connections, such as transport, broadband, or social links.

The Prince's Trust and Brecon Beacons National Park - Get into Rural Skills

Last year The Prince’s Trust ran an exciting programme with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority ( BBNPA); Get Into Rural Skills, FREE opportunity for young people in Powys providing them with an opportunity to work with BBNPA and gain accredited skills and knowledge linked to land and access management. We are currently seeking young people from Powys to take part in the next Get Into Rural Skills programme which starts shortly.

To this end we are holding a  Get Into Rural Skills Taster/Selection Day on Wednesday 4th April 2018 at Brecon Beacons National Park Authority Headquarters, Plas y Ffynnon, Cambrian Way, Brecon, LD3 7HP. A number of young people will be selected at the Taster Day to participate in a 2 week programme with BBNPA and Prince’s Trust. The actual programme runs from 9th April – 20th April inclusive at Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre, Libanus, LD3 8ER although transport is provided by BBNPA from Brecon town centre to get the young people there (or wherever else they need to be). Travelling costs are paid (not taxi), lunch provide and participation in the 2 week programme does not affect benefits.

After the 2 week programme a handful of the young people will be selected to work with BBNPA for a further few months. The focus is very much on this being a training/ skills development opportunity. To this end, a 15 hours a week apprentice salaried element, will be complemented by a volunteering element for the other 3 days thereby allowing BBNPA to offer the participants a much greater number of fantastic, accredited training courses an opportunity to gain some excellent rural skills. These could include:  chainsaw, driving lessons,  ride on mower, tractor driving with flail,  Level 2 dry stone walling,  hedge laying skills, All Terrain Vehicle, CSCS construction industry card, vermin control, control  invasive species, a tree identification course and many more.  Benefits can still be claimed during this time.

I am working in the Powys area over the next couple of weeks I order to recruit young people onto the programme and very I’m happy to meet up with potential young people you identify to chat about the programme and hopefully book their place on the Taster Day.

Who can apply? Young people, not in employment (or less than 16 hours a week), not in education or training ( or less than 14 hours a week), aged 18 -30yrs who live in Powys and who want to develop such practical skills and knowledge. Any previous convictions and relevant medical history will be considered on a case by case basis.

I am also holding  a Get Into Rural Skills Information Session  at Brecon Job Centre Plus, Canal Road, Brecon LD3 7HL on  Monday 26th March 2pm – 4pm. This informal session  is open to young people who are signed up to the Taster Day and young people who are thinking about signing up. Park Wardens will be in attendance sharing about the National Park and showing some of the equipment they use. Prince’s Trust will share a little about how we can help young people too. The young man who was referred in to the last Get Into Rural Skills programme by Gwalia and still working with BBNPA will be sharing a little of his story so this should be of interest to your young people. If anyone wants to come along to that, just let me know so I can plan an appropriate level of refreshments.

Funds for Organisations Working with Unpaid Carers - Triangle Trust 1949

http://www.triangletrust.org.uk/

The Triangle Trust provides funding through its Development Grants programme twice a year toregistered charities, not-for-profit social enterprises and community interest companies in the UK whose primary purpose is to support unpaid carers (spring round) and the rehabilitation of offenders or ex-offenders (autumn round).

Applications from organisations working in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales are particularly welcome. Organisations must have a constitution whose primary purpose is to support unpaid carers.

Development Grants provide funds towards any costs incurred by the applicant in undertaking its core business so that sustainable income sources can be developed and the organisation’s income will not be reduced when the grant comes to an end. The grant could, for example, be used to enable an organisation to make a step change such as diversifying its income streams or setting up a social enterprise to help it become more sustainable in the long term.

Grants are available for up to £80,000 over three years with a maximum of £35,000 in year one. The amount requested each year is expected to taper down as applicants develop other sustainable income streams.

The emphasis of the Development Grant is to support the development of a solid foundation for the future. The grant could, for example, be used to enable an organisation to make a step change such as diversifying its income streams or setting up a social enterprise to help it become more sustainable in the long term.

Please note this funding is not available for charities with a broader remit that are running a project to support unpaid carers.

This is a highly competitive fund with only five Carer Development grants awarded in 2017.

The deadline for applications to the Spring round is 3 May 2018 (12 noon).

Children’s Services Co-ordinator

£21,000 per annum, Dolfor, Mid Wales, 37.5 hours per week.

The Honeypot Children’s Charity offers both respite breaks and outreach support to young carers and vulnerable children aged 5-12, many of whom would otherwise have nowhere to turn.

At our two beautiful residential sites, children are able to choose from a range of ways to spend their break; swimming in our pool, playing on our adventure playground, riding bikes, visiting pets corner or baking special treats are just some of the ways in which these children are able to play, have fun, and make happy memories which they can cherish for years to come.

This is an exciting new opportunity for a highly organised, motivated and proactive individual to join the dedicated, passionate team at our beautiful site on the outskirts of Newtown.

The role will include liaising with referrers and with the families of young carers, organising staff rotas, planning travel for the minibus that collects then for their respite breaks and entering information on our database, as well as general office duties.

We are looking for someone with strong IT skills, and some experience in a busy administration role. Most importantly, you will have the flexible approach and a can-do attitude needed to work as part of our small team. You are likely to need a car, as we are based in a rural location.

To apply, please send us your CV with a brief covering letter telling us why you are interested in the role to info@honeypot.org.uk

Apply now for the opportunity to make a difference to children who need it, and leave them with memories to cherish for years to come.

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month!

Ovarian cancer is the UKs biggest gynaecological killer. A woman dies every two hours from the disease, and there is currently no national screening for it. Currently awareness is the only tool we have in the fight against the disease.

They issue an E-bulletin and info about how to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms and it would be great if you could include this in your newsletters, blogs, social media or websites.

They also have useful info graphics and slides suitable for TV screens / GP surgery screens.

They would be really grateful if you could share this info with your services users, communities and networks. If you have connections with your local GP clusters / surgeries and would be able to distribute GP training packs please let them know as they have hard copy training packs designed specifically for GP’s and primary care.
