The Commissioner's Community Fund

A FUNDING programme with £75,000 available to communities across Dyfed-Powys has been launched. Applications are welcome from groups and organisations in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Powys, who would use the funds to help improve people’s lives.
The Commissioner’s Community Fund offers grants of up to £5,000 to charities, voluntary organisations and community groups so they can develop ideas that have a positive impact on the areas they work in.
Projects must reflect in some way the priorities highlighted in the 2017-21 Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Plan, which are: Keeping our communities safe, safeguarding the vulnerable, protecting our communities from serious threats, and connecting with communities.
The funding is available to public sector, private sector, voluntary or community organisations and we encourage organisations to work together.
There is a maximum application threshold of £5,000 and applications higher than this will not be accepted. The programme is open from April 13, 2017 with a closing date of June 2, 2017.
For further information, you can ring our office on 01267 226 440 and ask to speak with Jessica Williams or email us: opcc@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk

Take part in Forming a Welsh Youth Parliament

On 19 October 2016, following a unanimous vote of support from Assembly Members, the Assembly Commission agreed to explore the feasibility of establishing a Welsh Youth Parliament, and the Llywydd, Elin Jones AM, announced her intention to establish a Welsh Youth Parliament.
Since this announcement, we, the Assembly Commission, have been busy working with young people and adults from organisations that work with and/or promote the views and needs of young people in Wales, to develop the key features of a youth parliament for the people of Wales to consider. These representatives have come together to form the Youth Parliament Steering Group (Steering Group) and include members from the following national youth organisations in Wales: Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Youth Cymru, Urdd, Children in Wales, NUS Wales, Wales Observatory for Human and Children’s Rights, CWVYS, Scouts Cymru, GirlGuiding Cymru, Young Farmers Wales, Principal Youth Officer’s Group and CYPAW.
The next step of the journey is to find out what young people, and those professionals who work with young people, think about our proposal to establish a new Welsh Youth Parliament.
The consultation will be open 28 April 2017 – 30 June 2017.

The Right Way: A Children’s Rights Approach in Wales published by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales

The Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People  is very pleased to have been involved in developing the above framework for working with children which is  grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We would urge public bodies, or any other organisation wishing to embed a children’s rights approach in everything they do to make full use of the ‘The Right Way’ framework.

The Children's Society inquiry into Cyber Bullying?

What do the Young People you work with think about cyber bullying?

The Children’s Society is running an inquiry, in collaboration with YoungMinds and Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham, focussing on the impact of cyberbullying on children and young people’s mental health. As well as assessing its impact, the inquiry will examine the steps social media companies are taking to tackle such behaviour on their platforms, and whether the industry is going far enough to protect children and young people on their sites.

The inquiry will be chaired by Alex Chalk MP, and will be made up of a cross-party group of MPs and Peers. There will also be two expert panellists, John Carr OBE and well-known social media influencer Grace Victory.

A Date for your Diary - 3 May.

Dear 3rd Sector Service Provider Forum Colleagues

Thank you to those that have already booked to attend the next meeting of the forum to take place on 3rd May at Hafod a Hendre, Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd.

This will provide an opportunity to gain a mutual understanding of what the Council and Health Board plans are for 2017 onwards in relation to Co-production and how we can work together to help make it happen. We will be joined by senior officers of Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board, including both chief executives.

The intention is to focus discussion around the localities of North, Mid and South Powys and with the Prevention & Early Intervention strategy in mind.

The afternoon will provide an opportunity to learn more about the new Powys Community Connector service  and how it could support your services and how best to work with it.

Also, we have been invited to consider the possibility of the Third Sector Service Provider Forum also serving as the Social Value Forum for Powys, as required by the Social Services & Well Being Act. This would mean agreeing terms of reference and exploring possibile alternative models of delivery for health & social care services.

If you haven't yet done so, please book to attend by completing the booking form (links below), indicating whether you'll be attending for the whole day or just part of it. In addition to the venue, PAVO will provide coffee/tea during the day. Those staying for the whole day are asked to bring their own lunch.

Powys Youth Services

Update on Powys Youth Services

Over the course of the last year Powys County Council’s Youth Service has entered a period of significant change in managing its affairs during the continued austerity felt across the whole of public service.

The Service has reduced its direct presence in local communities, and with directly run youth clubs now provided in Llandrindod Wells, Newtown, Welshpool, Brecon and Ystradgynlais. The county’s high schools continue to be supported by the Service for those learners needing extra support and engagement.  The Service also continues to support the important work of the Young Farmers’ Clubs in Powys and also the Urdd.

However, as you may be aware the Service has been challenged to reduce its costs by 50% by 2018-19, and whilst significant budget savings have been achieved, the Service needs to start planning for budget reductions for a year’s time.   No formal proposals have been put forward at this time, but the Service is looking to review viable options and will be seeking discussions with the new Cabinet and local members, and other key stakeholders once the local government elections have concluded.

If you have any queries regarding the current situation with Powys’ Youth Services please contact PAVO at peter.lathbury@pavo.org.ukor 01597822191.
