Youth Work Awards 2017

The Youth Work Excellence Awards  2017 are open for nominations.

The Youth Work Excellence Awards will take place in Cardiff on 23 June 2017. The evening is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate outstanding youth work projects and youth workers from across Wales.

Please note: additional category for volunteer youth workers has been developed. This award is for a volunteer youth worker who is not paid to deliver youth work at any time.

Cymraeg for Kids

Cymraeg for Kids’ rolled out across Wales

A scheme to encourage parents to use Welsh with their babies and young children will be available in all 22 local authority areas after it received a £225,000 funding boost from the Welsh Government, Minister for the Welsh Language Alun Davies has announced .

'Cymraeg for Kids' is a unique project set up by the Welsh Government in partnership with Mudiad Meithrin to support and encourage parents and prospective parents to transfer the Welsh language to children and promote the benefits of bilingualism.

New service for Brecon

A new childcare service in Brecon has been officially opened by the Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children, Carl Sargeant.

The new pre-school at Priory Church in Wales Primary School is one of five new Flying Start childcare settings across Powys.

Flying Start is the Welsh Government’s targeted early years programme for families with children under four years of age living in some of the most disadvantaged areas of Wales.

It provides free part time childcare for 2-3 year olds; and enhanced health visiting service; access to parenting support, and support for speech language and communication.

Children, Young People and Families Network Event 16th March 2017

The event previously billed as a pre commissioning discussion for Families First has unfortunately had to be postponed and will be set for later in the year.

PAVO is seeking to recruit to the following posts:-

Two Community Health and Wellbeing Coordinators

Located in Welshpool and Llanfyllin, working 35 hours per week.

Fluent oral and written Welsh is highly desirable for these posts.

The post holders will coordinate a Third Sector Surgery of services that will be based near the surgery location in addition project managing “social prescribing” with both GP surgeries.  They will support adults, as part of integrated community based health and well-being support services, to access local community services and activities provided by the public, private and third sectors.  Additionally, they will broker their access to these services and work directly with the individual to find bespoke solutions to meet their personal needs.  They will support people to access the right support, first time, in the right way and seek to empower them to build their own networks of support within their community.

Salary:- £24,717 per annum  funded until 31^st March 2018

Groundwork is working with Tesco to encourage voluntary or community organisations, schools, health bodies, Parish/Town Councils, local authorities and social housing providers across Powys to apply for a grant of up to £5,000 to improve green spaces and increase community participation.

How Time Flies "10 yrs ago February 2007, Muddy Faces outdoor resources website was launched. I took orders and packed boxes all from my attic room in a terrace house in Sheffield and a few weeks after the launch I discovered I was pregnant with my first son. Well, we have come a long way since then, not in distance, but in achievement. Below are a few of my personal highlights and challenges over the last 10 years. Many thanks indeed for all the support and encouragement over the years and I'm looking forward to the developments we have planned for the next couple of years."  Liz Edwards

The Muddy Faces Journey 2007: Launch of Muddy Faces outdoor resources website and the start of our continuing dedication to producing kits, guides and literature to help practitioners outdoors with a particular focus on Forest Schools, How to cards for using tools and lighting fires and Forest School Leader's guide for using knives with groups.

2008: Where possible we begin to source products produced in the UK. 2009: We produced our very popular den building leaflet. We also moved out of the attic room into a small warehouse.

2010: Son number two arrives and we start our Mud Campaign in collaboration with Jan White to encourage outdoor play and interaction with natural materials as a part of every child’s continuous provision in early years settings

Powys Health Board are inviting you to take part in forming the Health and Care Strategy

We all know that these are challenging times, particularly with the prolonged period of austerity and the changing needs of the people of Powys. We also know that Powys is a place where we aspire to help improve the wellbeing of all people. This is why this draft strategy seeks to enable children and young people to ‘Start Well’, for people to ‘Live Well’ and older people to ‘Age Well’. Over 1000 people have contributed in some way to the development of this strategy so far and your views are needed on what has been produced.

We are delighted to announce we have been granted funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation: a family-founded, grant-making trust which has been supporting charities across the UK for over 50 years.

As from April 2017 we will deliver a programme of workshops across Wales. The workshops are for families caring for children with disabilities or additional needs. By families we mean parents, foster carers, grandparents, family friends, adult siblings etc. – all welcome. The workshops run for around three hours and are available to groups of families. This could be:

• Local or national parent support groups.
• Groups of families brought together by health, social care, school or community workers.
• Or, simply, a handful of families that happen to know each other.

The wellbeing of Powys

Powys County Council and third sector colleagues will be out and about in February seeking your views on their draft Wellbeing Assessment, asking if they have identified correctly the issues facing the county (and its strengths).

The work is on behalf of the multi-agency Powys Public Service Board and it is in response to the Welsh Government's Wellbeing of Future Generations Act.

There will be public events in libraries, supermarkets and 'high streets' around the county as well as meeting with a variety of community groups.  Please advertise these to your groups and the people you work with, or gather their views to feed in through PAVO - lucy.taylor@pavo.org.uk

"Train for Change" - Social Services and Well-being Act 2014 Training

Due to popular demand we have put on another date for this event on the 20^th February.

“Train for Change” – Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014

One day training session designed to help managers understand and implement the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. The sessions will be run using a new resource that brings together existing training modules on introduction and general functions, assessing and meeting needs, safeguarding and culture change. These sessions will offer more information on the expectations, implications and impact of the Act to prepare managers to be able to plan and adapt to embrace the changes expected as set out in legislation.

Target audience:  Independent Care Organisation Managers and 3^rd Sector Provider Managers

Start time: Registration from 09:00 for a prompt 09:30 start – 16:00 Refreshments will be provided through the day

Temporary Overnight Closure of Llandrindod Wells Minor Injury Unit from 1 to 28 February 2017

Dear Colleagues

With sincere apologies, the Minor Injury Unit at Llandrindod Wells will temporarily close overnight (midnight to 7am) from 1 to 28 February 2017.

A service of this nature relies on specially-trained staff, and we are able to provide this service through cross-cover between the Minor Injuries Unit and the ward. A combination of staff absence means that we will not be able to provide 24-hour cover for both the hospital ward and Minor Injury Unit during February. After very careful consideration we have decided that the safest option is overnight closure of the MIU.

The Minor Injury Unit at Llandrindod Wells Hospital will continue to be available from 7am to midnight seven days a week.

Whilst numbers attending the Minor Injuries Unit overnight are very low, we recognise that this will be a cause of anxiety and we are working hard to share information about alternative sources of advice and treatment during this temporary closure.

We are sharing information via social media this evening (@PTHBhealth on Twitter and www.facebook.com/pthbhealth on Facebook) to provide advance notice and will also be sharing information with local media and community channels, informing people who attend MIU, posting clear information at MIU and hospital entrances and more.

A copy of a poster with information about alternative sources of health advice and information is attached.
