Being a Trustee

Tuesday 20th February (full day)

Content:

Being a trustee is a responsible voluntary role and one that comes with duties and responsibilities. This course will take you through the legal responsibilities you have when you are a trustee as well as your role and the responsibilities you have towards your organisation.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Understand what it means to be a trustee, who can be one and what roles and responsibilities trustees may have
• Appreciate what trustees can be liable for, and know how to limit potential risks
• Understand the principles of good governance, the roles of specific officers, and the difference between a trustee board and its subcommittees
• Have an overview of what is needed for effective trustee recruitment and induction.

Childcare and Play Qualifications - workshops to engage the sector

News from Play Wales

Qualifications Wales is currently working with key partners to develop a new suite of Health & Social Care and Childcare qualifications for Wales. This work entails developing new Approval Criteria which set out the minimum requirements for a qualification. As part of this development work, we are engaging with experts from the sector to ask for their feedback on our proposals. We will be doing this via a series of Wales wide events for practitioners, employers, training providers, teachers and lecturers, in which we will be sharing aspects of the Approval Criteria. During the events, we will be inviting participants to discuss the aims, structure, schemes of assessment, titles and grading of the new qualifications.

We will also be asking attendees to consider the support and resources needed to deliver the qualifications from September 2019. We will then use the feedback from the sessions to strengthen the Approval Criteria ready to be published in March 2018.

·        Further education: your rights to education and transport.

·        Social and health care: the rights of adults with a learning disability.

I am pleased to inform you that the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Bill was passed yesterday.

 

Welcoming the news, Education Secretary, Kirsty Williams, said: “Today is an historic day for education in Wales. Nearly a quarter of learners in Wales will experience some form of additional learning need (ALN) during their early years or education and this Bill places them at the very heart of our system. It focusses on identifying their needs as early as possible and working with them and their families to plan the right support. Once the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Bill receives Royal Assent, expected in January 2018, it will pave the way for a radical new approach; driving improvements in standards to ensure all learners are supported to meet their full potential.”

 

Earlier this year the Welsh Government held a consultation on options for implementing the Bill if it became law. I am the new Education and Community Officer for the House of Commons in Wales.

I work with schools and community groups offering workshops on behalf of the House of Commons on a range of topics – including:

·        ‘Introduction to UK Parliament’

·        ‘Campaigning and engaging UK Parliament’

·        ‘Women in Parliament (2018 will include working on our vote 100 campaign)

·         Empower! (Sessions designed for Adults with learning disabilities)

·         Select Committees

All of these sessions can be delivered in both Welsh and English.

Mental Health Foundation - Festive fundraising

Christmas is a stressful time, one foundation that is working for good mental health for all has taken
an unusual way to raise funds for their work.

The Mental Health Foundation is taking part in Paypals annimated " Turkey Dash".  Their annimated turkey will race against other charity's turkeys  on Channel 4, 15th December 8pm. The turkey that raises the most money will win.

Tampon Tax Fund Grants - deadline 28th January 2018

The Tampon Tax Fund was announced by the Chancellor during the 2015 Autumn Statement. The Office for the Civil Society, which is part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), is running and managing this UK-wide fund.

 Charitable, benevolent and philanthropic organisations based and working in the UK can submit applications for grants of at least £1 million.

There is £15 million for the current fund which covers 2018-19. The minimum grant is £1 million. There is no maximum level of grant.

The grant must not represent more than 50 per cent of the applicant's collective annual income. Grants may be for one or two year projects, with a maximum of two years up until 31 March 2020.

The funding will support projects that focus on at least one of the following categories:

Violence against Women and Girls:  Mental Health and Wellbeing : General programme - Applications will be considered from organisations working to improve the lives of disadvantaged or under-represented women and girls.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 28 January 2018.

Consultation -A Major Trauma Network for South and West Wales and South Powys

Consultation -A Major Trauma Network for South and West Wales and South Powys

A consultation is currently under way on proposals to establish a Major Trauma Network for South and West Wales and South Powys. This would include designating University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff as a Major Trauma Centre.

Developing a Major Trauma Network for South and West Wales and South Powys aims to improve survival, improve quality of life and reduce long term illness and disability for people following major trauma injuries. These injuries may include gunshot & knife wounds, serious head injuries, industrial accidents, serious falls (e.g. with head injury), multiple injuries resulting from road traffic accidents, and mass casualty events.

North Powys already benefits from being part of a Major Trauma Network covering North West Midlands and North Wales, including the Major Trauma Centre in Stoke and Trauma Unit in Shrewsbury.

Please note that this new network will primarily affect Brecknock and Radnorshire, as Montgomeryshire is already served by the Major Trauma Network for North Wales and North West Midlands.

Powys County Council Children's Services Improvement Plan 2017-2020 / Cynllun Gwella Gwasanaethau Plant Cyngor Sir Powys 2017-2020

This improvement plan was produced in response to Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales's (CSSIW) review of Powys County Council's Children's Services in July 2017. It sets out the immediate, medium and long term actions that will be undertaken by the Local Authority to address the recommendations made by CSSIW.

Childrens Services Review Document

Commissioning services for people with Learning Disabilities.

The Minister for Children & Social Services launched two documents developed by the National Commissioning Board at the ADSS Autumn Seminar last week. The first concerns the Good Practice Guidance in relation to commissioning services for people with learning disabilities. This is meant to be overarching high level guidance which will be supplemented by more detailed guidance with examples of good practice in relation to specific service areas beginning with supported living services. Other services will be covered as part of a future work program. Hopefully it provides a clear sense of direction for service development. A Welsh language version has been prepared but will need some changes to the format. English and Welsh translations of the Easy Read version will be available shortly. These will be forwarded in due course.

The second document concerns a Practice Guide in Leading Integrated and Collaborative Commissioning. We hope this will be a useful tool for regional partnership boards to help them assess where there are in relation to integrated commissioning (where this appropriate) and develop their plans for the future.
